Another picture of my lovely Coypus ! I hope you don't get bored with them... The weather is grey and rainy, in France - no sun, no snow, nothing. There are not many photo possibilities, so I keep on posting older pictures from my last trip to the lake.

This Coypu looks like an adult, but he was smaller in size than the other so I imagine he is young and not yell full-gtown. Anyways, he was more shy than the others. Most of them were swimming very close to pick up the bread and apples I was throwing, but this one was at a certain distince, waiting for the apples to come floating to him.

The coypu somewhat resembles a very large rat in appearance. Adults are typically 5–9 kg in weight, and 40–60 cm in body length, with a 30–45 cm tail. I don't know if you can imagine, but this is cery big for a rodent, they are impressive when they stand before you.

They have a coarse, darkish brown outer fur with a soft under-fur. Two distinguishing marks are the presence of a white patch on the muzzle, and webbed hind feet. They can also be identified by their bright orange-yellow incisor teeth (unlike rats, which have brownish yellow incisors). The nipples of female coypu are high on her flanks. This allows their young to feed while the female is in the water.

Coypu can also be mistaken for another widely dispersed semi-aquatic rodent that occupies the same wetland habitats, the muskrat. The muskrat, however, is smaller, more tolerant of cold climates, and has a laterally flattened tail that it uses to assist in swimming, whereas the tail of a coypu is round.

They are herbivorous, feeding on river plants, and live in burrows alongside stretches of water.

They often destroy the place where they live by overharvesting the shores and by digging tunnels, but they are cute and funny to watch. I really hope they will stay at our lake, because I have never seen them anywhere else and it would be a pity it they would disappear, I love to spend time with them.

Hi Valerie,
how could anyone possibly get bored with seeing these little creatures! Do they live in the wild all over France? They look full of character. This shot is great, full of detail and very nicely composed...i like the look of his teeth here, perfect for gnawing!

Hallo Valerie
When a photo is as good as this one, one can never get bored at looking at the same thing time after time. I also never had the opportunity to give my comments on your Coypu photos. This is a clear close-up with lots and lots of detail. This animal is really enjoying its lunch and I am amazed at how clear one can see the nails on its paws. I like the grey whiskers and the small ear. What really makes this photo special to me is the little bit of water droplets on its head. Thanks for sharing. It was lovely to look at.
Kind regards
Anna

Hola Valerie,
Saludos
Hernán
