[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
ARGIOPE BRUENNICHI (Argiope fasciée, Tijgerspin, waspspider, wespenspinne, hvepseedderkop) is the largest Orbitele Araneus in France. Females (bigger than males) can reach up to 15mm, exceptionnaly 20mm (without arms). These predators play an important role in regulating some insects flying or jumping (orthopteres) at low level. Their resistant circular web is placed at 20-30cm above the ground. Argiope is very fast. Their preys are bitten and wrapped up in a few seconds. These spiders are always placed in the center of the web, where you can find sometimes a sort of zigzag reinforced web starting from the center. The Argiope attaches firmly it's cocoon on tiny branches tangle close to the web. When it becomes full of eggs, the female Argiope doesn't care about web and preys anymore, and watches the future progeniture up to it's dead.
-------------------------
To find this beautiful spider, (frequent in south and west of France and southern UK, less frequent elsewhere), the best period is September, on the side of a path between low vegetation chalky prairies, well exposed to the sun. Your research will be much easier in a dewy morning, when the cobwebs are visible all the way long. The light will be much better also. If you are shooting using back or side light, I recommend to take with you a little mirror to lighten your subject with the sun light and reveal details in the shade. Handheld. Hazy sun.
------------------------
Autolevels, magic wand to reduce light on tiny overexposed parts, USM. Use of Neatimage to soften the out of focus background.

Not as colourful as Jeppe's specimen, but I do like the dew-covered web ;-) Sharpness, colours and DOF are very good, only the tips of the hind legs fall outside DOF range.

What made this even more special is the part in your note of what technique to yous to capture these guys/gals and you would have earned full points just for that! The there is the excellent capture as well. The image contains excellent sharpness and detail and I like it a lot. Thanks for your effort in this.

Hi Jean Michel
This is one lovely "ugly" in a characteristic pose! I can even see her eyes! I am sure glad they are not as big as on the screen! Good picture!
