The Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) is a small gull which breeds in much of Europe and Asia, and also in coastal eastern Canada. Most of the population is migratory, wintering further south, but some birds in the milder westernmost areas of Europe are resident. Some birds will also spend the winter in the northeastern United States.

This gull is 38-44cm long with a 94-105 cm wingspan. It breeds in colonies in large reedbeds or marshes, or on islands in lakes, nesting on the ground. Like most gulls, it is highly gregarious in winter, both when feeding or in evening roosts. It is not a pelagic species, and is rarely seen at sea far from coasts.

The Black-headed Gull is a bold and opportunist feeder and will scavenge in towns or take invertebrates in ploughed fields with equal relish.

In flight, the white leading edge to the wing is a good field mark. The summer adult has a chocolate-brown head (not black, despite the name), pale grey body, black tips to the primary wing feathers, and red bill and legs. The hood is lost in winter, leaving just dark vertical streaks.

This species takes two years to reach maturity. First year birds have a black terminal tail band, more dark areas in the wings, and, in summer, a less fully developed dark hood.

This is a noisy species, especially at colonies, with a familiar "kree-ar" call. Its scientific name means "Laughing Gull".

The Black-headed Gull is the prefectural bird of Tokyo and the Yurikamome mass transit system is named after it.

Bonjour voisin!
Excellent in-flight capture of a Black-headed Gull in winter plumage, nice and sharp with its partner in the BG. well composed against a blue sky in fine lighting.

Hi Robi.
Funny coincidence. We have similar note. I like your shot of the cute pair of the seagulls. Nice synchronous flight. Excellent freezing of the scene with great details and sharpness of the bird. This is such a fantastic capture with the gulls flying in tandem.
I really like the sharpness of the one in the foreground and then the second higher one just out of focus.

superbe shot à l'envol de ces goélans, la luminosité de l'image
est excellente, j'aimes beaucoup ton POV les oiseaux
d'en-dessous,excellente netteté et détails
de celui de l'avant-plan,

une question de goût, au départ je n'aimais pas que le premier
qui est en vol soit floue, j'aurais préféré qu'il soit net
comme le 2e, mais maintenant plusss je regarde l'image
et plusss je me dit ça ne dérange pas autant que ça à l'image
et au contraire sa donne une autre touche à l'image, TFS

Perfect frozen action of the near bird. The high shutter speed works well. I think the DOF is attractive as well. I like the fact the near bird is in focus and the far one oof

Hello Robi, I really like this lens. The focus looks v. good and the details on the bird is nice, exposure looks tough being white and the bright light, but you managed to get some good details in the underwings. A good pov and the other oof bird is quite nicely placed, giving a good sense of depth to the picture. tfs Rgds Necip
