Pyrochroa coccinea is undoubtedly the most common species of the small family of pyrochroïdés which is represented in Europe only by 3 species: pyrochroa coccinea, pyrochroa serraticornis and schizotus pectinicornis

Adult, pyrochre scarlet measurement from 14 to 18 millimetres length, and is characterized by a splendid red color from where the nickname of cardinal. Males and females delivered one near, élytres and red thoraxes, head legs and antennas are black. The male is characterized by pectinate antennas (had as the teeth a comb)
whereas those of the female are serratiformes (in teeth of saws).

The larvae of the cardinal appear two weeks after the laying which has June place/July. The eggs are deposited in the bark of died trees, stocks, trunks with ground or firewood. Very carnivorous, the flattened body and the head, very nimble, equipped with powerful mandibles, the larva is remarkably well adapted to the life between wood and barks. It drives out and is nourished of all insects and xylophagous larvae, snails, towards or even, if the need is felt some in the event of shortage of food, becomes cannibal. The larval life lasts from two to three years, the larva measuring thirty millimetres then. The nymphose is carried out at the beginning of spring, and lasts one or two weeks.

Everywhere in Europe except in the extreme north, Pyrochroa coccinea is fairly common. It attends the wet plain like the mountain, visiting of its slow flight the flowers and the forest vegetation in the search of nectar, sap: all kinds of sweetened liquids.

Hello Christophe,

This is a very nice macro. Composition is very good, details are nice and colors are perfect. I do think the focus is a wee bit soft, but nothing serious. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

I agree with Pieter, the focus is a touch soft. Nevertheless, a beautifully coloured beetle and great contrast with the green leaf. I also like the diagonal angle and OOF background.

Nice macro Christophe. Nice colors and a good composition. A bit soft in focus, but probably it's because of the wind that shakes the object.
Well done.

Great composition for a great subject too. I think that with the +4 you where a bit close to get enough DOF even with the f:16 used. Nevertheless is a beautiful image, I like it, TFS.
In a friendly way, Felipe :)
PD: Good note too.

Hello Christophe.
Personal assessment of the photo: excellent.
Strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
Thank you very much for sharing.

Interesting insect - I don't think we have anything like it in the US, or my part of it, anyway, and its nice to see. As has been pointed out, DOF is a bit shallow, due to the high macro enlargement, I guess. Considering you shot at 1/30, no signs of camera shake.

Very colorful critter you have here. Nice details and contrasts. Lovely compo. Very well done.
