[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
Sitta europaea, (Famille of Sittidae) Small sparrow (14 cm, 19 to 24 gr.) climbing with short tail, wings broad and strong beak. Above gray blue, long support black of the beak side of the neck, white cheeks; below reddish orange, becoming maroon with the back of the sides and the low belly; white points with the rectrices. Hammer seeds and hazel nuts. In its long beak, it can store two or three seeds of sunflower. It flies away then in direction of a tree to dissimulate its spoils in the cracks of the trunk. It wedges hazel nuts in cracks and assene of powerful blows of beak until the hull splits into two. These hammerings are so strong that one would believe to hear a peak. Sound cries whistled: tuit-tuit-tuit..., tsit repeated. Habitat: Parks, orchards, gardens with old trees (leafy). Niche in the cavities of the trees, sometimes of the walls, nesting boxes; build the entry and the cracks with mortar (pellets of clay and saliva). Period of nesting: Towards the end of April or the beginning May Numbers incubations: 1 laying a per annum. Number of eggs: 6 to 8 eggs (20/14 mm). Incubation: during 13 or 15 days. The small ones leave the nest 22 to 24 days after the hatching, and learn how to climb skilfully on the tree trunks, even the head in bottom like their parents. Behavior: While going down or on the side, the sittelle one is driven by short jerks along the trunks and of the branches. When it goes down along a trunk, it is indifferently head or tail the first; at the time to sleep, in a hollow of tree or a slit of the bark, it settles head in bottom.
