Ce canard plongeur est remarquable pour ses couleurs contrastées. Mâle et femelle sont assez dissemblables. Le mâle possède une tête roux vif avec le dessous jaune. Le cou, la poitrine et le ventre sont noirs. Les flancs blancs contrastent avec le dos brun foncé. Une bande blanche barre l'épaule. Le bec est rouge, les pattes rouge-orange. La femelle est plus discrète : dessus de la tête brun, joues blanc grisâtre, dos brun, dessous plus clair.

This plunger duck is remarkable for its contrasted colors. Male and female are rather dissimilar.
The male has a russet-red head sharp with the yellow lower part.
The neck, the chest and the belly are black.
The white sides contrast with the dark brown back. A white band bars l' shoulder.
The nozzle is red, the legs orange red.
The female is more discrete: above of the head brown, cheeks white grisâtre, brown back, below more clearly.
