Germination of a seed of bamboo Pleioblastus pumilus. An ear of bamboo was collected the 22/07/2004 in the arboretum of Michel Daveau. The seed placed in wet chamber started to germinate the 1/08/2004 and was placed in medium of KNOP (B with E) then on bed of aqualit (F,G). Joined to the cotyledon, the embryo which one can observe out of B carries to the top of the insertion point a small white prominence (B1) which is the gemmule. But instead of being free, the gemmule is included in a kind of sheath, the coleoptile, which increases much at the beginning of the germination (C,D) but whose development stops soon. At this time, the gemmule will have to bore the sheath to be with the free air (E1) where it opens out its first sheets then. Located below (B2) the coleorhize lengthens (C, D, E) and is inserted in the ground. No moment the cotyledon leaves ground, germination is known as hypogean. Legend: A: ear of Pleioblastus pumilus with a seed in 1. The scale 4mm is not worth that for photography A, it gives an idea of the size of seed. The photographs A, B, C, D and E are taken under Leitz magnifying glass with Nikon Coolpix 5000. The dates are as follows: B, 3/08/2004; C, 5/08; D, 6/08; E, 10/08; F, 23/08; G, 5/09. Gemmule: bud of the embryo which develops in a stem broken into leaf during germination. Coleoptile: sheath wrapping the gemmule and the first sheets. Coleorhize: sheath covering the root. KNOP: physiological solution whose ionic composition is adapted to the plants. Aqualit: mix of sand and clay used for the grounds of aquarium. Hypogean: who develops under ground.

Although this is a cultivated plant, and there might be some problems with TOS, I think the way you posted, as a document showing all the germination process adds a lot to this site. A beautiful work, appreciate the effort.

Excellent documentated shot Didier, I agree with Felipe, this might have a bit of problem with TN (shhh.. lets hope Robert didn't see it) great shots, well documentated and nice framing. Well done, TFS

Bonne idée ce montage permettant d'admirer l'évolution de la petite graine à la plante. Bien vu Didier !

What a fantastic idea, presenting this germination process in such a useful and artistic manner.
Well done and thank you, Didier!

Bonsoir Didier,
Voilà une très intéressante présentation! J'aime bien le côté didactique de la note qui est très bien servie par les photos.
Beau travail d'ensemble!
