This is from last week's Sunday - I walked from my hometown Reichshoffen to my grandmother's house in Jaegerthal. There is a small path leading from one village to the other through the forest, and it's really great to walk there. On one side there is a hill with trees, so steep it is almost impossible to climb in some parts, and on the other side there is a small valley with a large river surrounded my muddy marshes.

In summer there are many flowers and insects here, in autumn it is full of mushrooms and fungi of all kind (although you must wear boots, for you get knee-deep into the mud when it is raining) and there are also wild boars - I have seen evidence oftheir presence many times, but I never actually saw one with my own eyes. It's really a great place for any nature lover.

This beauty was so well hidden that I didn"t see it at first. Then I tripped over a branch and fell on my knees (I've always been a bit clumsy :-) and there I saw a yellow spot in front ofme, I looked what it was, and here is what I found.

This fungi was approximately 4-5 cm long and had the consistency of jelly - it was really fun to touch ! :-)

After having looked in my fungi book, I would say it is "Tremella mesenterica" but it's very possible that I'm wrong - don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong. In English, this fungi is called "Witch's Butter", funny name, made mesmile when I read it.

Description : Fruit bodies 2-10 cm broad, consisting of clustered, convoluted folds with blunt margins ; surface yellow, to yellowish-orange, shiny when wet, otherwise dull ; context gelatinous, drying to a stiff, hard crust, reviving after periods of moisture ; odor and taste not distinctive.

I have also found a strange and funny legend about this fungi, explaining its trange name...
According to some eastern European legends, this fungus appears on your gate or on the entrance to your house when you have been put under a spell by a witch ! :-) The only way to get rid of the hex is to prick the witch's butter with straight pins, which makes the inner juices of the fruiting body leak out, killing the fungus, thus allowing you to live your life witch-free once again. Lucky I didn't find this one in front of my house, but in the middle of the forest ! :-)

Hello Valérie,
A fine portrait of T. mesenterica, what we call 'Gullkrös' in Swedish.
The technical features, lighting and POV are excellent with fine BG of lichens on the substrate and the dead leaves all combine to make this an excellent presentationof this species of fungus.
Thanks for sharing both this and the good note,
Best regards,
Ivan

Hi Valerie,
A lovely capture of this fungi which looks like pineapple jelly. Superb composition and sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Valerie!

You present us a little jewel. The colours of the fungi are superb and contrast so nicely with the other parts in the picture. Moreover, the natural environment suits the subject very well. Your notes are very pleasant and instructive at the same time.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Valerie.
You have described your places greatly. Very well written story. And you have illustrated it with amazing shot of a very attractive fungi. I also am impressed with terrific quality of the shot, superb details, wonderful rich colours, amazing combination of crisp sharpness of the main subject and light blurriness of the pictorial surroundings. Bravo. Well done. Great post.

Anne

Hello Valerie,
A fine close up of T mesenterica. Excellent sharpness, details & colors. TFS.
Regards-Subhash

Hi Valerie,

Very nice photo, with great sharpness and texture of the fruitbody, and You're right, this is Tremella mesenterica, unmistakable. The East European story is also very interesting, I've already heard it, but about a myxomycota specie, Fuligo septica, which is, by the way, named as "Witch's Butter" in Hungarian, and "Dog Vomit Slime Mould" in English.

Tfs the great pic and note, best wishes from Hungary, László

Bonjour Valérie,
On le mangerait, du moins des yeux !,ton champignon
Excellente exposition avec un superbe rendu des couleures naturelles
Bien vu
Albert

Hello Valerie!
Nice capture of this "terrestrial jelly" ;> I like low POV and good saturation. Really nie work and interesting contribution to diversity in TN gallery :)
All the best from winter Lodz,
Radomir

Hello Valerie,
it is very nice image with very interesting fungi! I like composition, warm yellow color, great details.

Best regards, Leonid

Dear Valèrie,
the way you observe and describe nature is so intense that it gives me the feeling I could enter your images and touch the objects by hand! Very well described, and a pleasure to see. Very interesting observation of those hidden jewels (jellies) on a wintertime forest ground. A pleasure.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hi Valerie,
This is a very interesting shot for me,not just because I love fungi, but because I took a very similar shot in my garden a few months ago.
You can see it Here
It is very similar to Tremella mesenterica but the richness of the yellow leads me to think that this is in fact Tremella lutescens (the same as my photo).
Because fungi are often found in low light conditions, the best way to photograph them is to use a mini tripod, and a longer exposure to capture the fine details.
A flash photo will work (if its not too close) but never really shows the true colour as well.
An interesting post.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Steve

slt Valerie,
Une fois j'en ai trouve un quand il faisait -20. J'ai ete impressione car il avait alors la forme d'un cristal. Dur, avec des facettes, et jaune.
Belle photo avec un joli assortiment de couleurs.
