Ecology:
The habitat type is forest undergrowth herbaceous médioeuropéens, basophils (limestone preferential). Range is the Mediterranean-Atlantic (Garrigues and sterile places du Midi, from the Hautes-Alpes and the Bouches-du-Rhone into the Gers and the Pyrenees, Corsica. Balearic Islands, Spain and Portugal).
General Description:
It is a 1 to 2 meters shrub with strong spines, that may be encountered on the arid hills of the Midi. The stems are ribbed, very tough, very oarswoman, erect, with branches ridged, smooth, filled with numerous lateral spines. Leaves simple, short petiolate, obovate or lanceolate, slightly pubescent below; spinescentes stipules, small leaves are hairy on the underside, at least when they are young. The stipules are transformed into small spines. The flowers are placed laterally in bundles along the old branches. They comport pedicels of bracteoles, at least equaling the calyx, a calyx glabrous, lip nearly equal; a banner glabrous, slightly longer than the calyx glabrous hull tube ends with two lips, upper deeply divided into two lobes and the lower three teeth. The fruit is a pod 25-33 mm. 5, linear-oblong, dented at top lanceolate, glabrous, with 3-7 seeds ovoid, olive.
Features: The function of chlorophyll is partly transferred to the stems. There is normally the presence of nodules, fixing atmospheric nitrogen in root nodules These are the result of a symbiosis between nitrogen-fixing bacteria, the rhizobia, and these different species of legumes. A special metabolic Fabaceae is the presence of an oxygen-binding hemoproteins, the leghemoglobin (or LegHb), very similar to hemoglobin. This protein is found in root nodules and can fix the oxygen to form an anaerobic environment conducive to the development of rhizobium. These plants are sometimes used to restore areas damaged by anthropic activities,
