Phylogenetic classification:
Perennials of the order Asparagales, belonging to the family Orchidaceae and the genus Ophrys. This is an advanced plant Angiosperm (euangiosperme) , monocotyledons, advanced liliidée.
Protection status:
Included in the national inventory of natural heritage - subject to regulation in France in general and protected in some departments. Frequently protected throughout Europe (for example, strictly protected in Czech Republic and Slovakia).
Origin and location:
North Africa, South-West Asia (Asia Minor, Iran), Southern Europe and Central Europe. Can occur up to relatively high latitudes (Germany).
Ecology:
Dry meadows, hills and mountains up to two thousand meters of altitude. Xerophilous plant, perfectly adapted to water limestone, like those of the garrigue.
General Description:
Small perennial, of ten to sixty centimeters, on average twenty five centimeters. The roots are tubers ovoid. The leaves are lanceolate and erect, located at the base of the plant, while smaller ones are barely visible along the stem, decreasing in size upwards and becoming bracteous towards base of inflorescence. The flowers are bright pink, with variations ranging from light pink to purple more or less dark, less frequently, the flowers can be white. Small, wide open, they have lateral sepals removed, a central sepal and petals forming a helmet. The labellum of six to nine millimeters, is equipped at the base of two outgrowths lamelliformes. It is deeply lobed, the median lobe was equal or slightly longer than the lateral.
Features:
Flour called tubers salep is very nutritious. It is used in diets for convalescents and children, and for trayaient gastrointestinal disorders.
