[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've been observing a coot nest for the last month or so. This nest is not far from the bank of a dead arm of the Seine river. It's partly hidden, and the environment is quiet. The only way to approach is to use a little pontoon and sit there without moving. After a while, specially after the first hatching, the female remains on the nest, while the male brings food and warn from any danger.
I've learned many attitudes from these birds: caring, feeding, standing up with aggressiveness against ducks (the most important colony on that spot), hiding from the swans, cleaning babies, and more. It's a simple and beautiful experience. I took over 400 shots during that period of time, coming regularly on the spot in the morning and the evening (question of light). Each serie is related to a specific attitude.
There were six eggs. This is the first baby to hatch out. You'll notice how miserable he looks. After a week, it's much better, except for the wings, looking like featherless stumps!
To learn more about coots, I recommend two sites. The link goes directly on the page.

- en français, with a sound file.

yes it is a sweet one Jean Michel,
very nice capture, from this water chicken, the light is not optimal for a shot like this but i like the result, very good job,
gr. Jaap

Nico.

Tendre composition familiale ! Joli cliché Jean Michel. Au bord du lac chez moi, je n'ai pas réussi à voir les nids...

Excellent shot, Jean Michel. You captured a wonderful moment here - and you certainly seemed to of had to work for it, too. I like the fact that we can still see the unhatched eggs. A great 'learning' shot. Well captured.
