Alpine Ibex
Capra ibex (Lat)
Bouquetin des alpes (Fr)
THE ALPIN IBEX :
The Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex) is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. Being an excellent climber, its habitat is the rocky region along the snowline above alpine forests of the European Alps. They tend to occupy steep, rough terrain at elevations of 6,500–15,000 feet (2,000–4,600 m). Both male and female ibexes have large, backwards-curving horns although those of the male are substantially larger and can grow to an impressive length of up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in).
Predators: wolves, lynxes, bears, foxes and eagles.
They eat during late afternoon and evening hours, descending at this time from the high steep cliffs and into the lower alpine meadows below.
There were common in the alps till mid-XVth century. Then they became almost extinct. Last specimen were protected just in time by king Victor-Emmanuel II (Italy, 1856). There are about 30.000 nowdays.
THE PIC :
This is a female. When I saw that one, a lady was standing at a 20 cm distance from it doing pictures with her mobile phone. The Ibex would just go on grazing. I didn't try to go that close. A couple of meters was more than enough. A blessing: after 4 weeks in the mountains, only the last 2 days were lucky enough to spot ibex.
Thanks for looking

Hello Jean Marie!
You were really lucky to see this species in the wild from so nice distance! :) Very nice close-up (even if I wuld prefer to see entire head on the photo :>), sharp and with good clarity.
TFS and have a nice Sunday!

Bonjour jean-Maris !
beautiful portrait and animal

Hello JM,
What a sharpness & facial details of this female Alpine Ibex! Amazing capture & well cropped to show the details of the eye; even something sitting (orange color substance) on its Rt ear is also evident. It stands out very well in an OOF background. TFS
