The lichen

This is probably Hypogymnia physodes : the thallus is whitish gray, slightly tinged with bluish green and is relatively plated and in many Rhizina underside; It is virtually devoid of apothecia and carrying Soral; lobes are more or less hollow.

Enclosing a branch, the common reaction is to think that this organization lives as a parasite on the tree. It is really nothing: indeed, these lichens live on trees as epiphytes and do not send any sucker in the tissues of their substrate. They just use the old bark for support, without causing any damage whatsoever.

They receive some unwanted insects but also many beneficial organisms! These branches are a real winter larder for many insectivorous birds: nuthatches, chickadees, robins, but also for large mammals (reindeer or caribou in particular) ... Also, is it better to preserve them!

The picture

The photograph was taken in conditions of low intensity lighting. The camera has been set in mode priority to the aperture (the subject is not very mobile). By setting the target zoom in mode macro it was possible to be close enough to the subject. With a sensitivity equivalent iso-160 and an aperture of f / 5 (taking into account the light), the exposure time has been 1 / 50.
They have the ability to concentrate acid and heavy metals or radionuclides. This may lead to their decline or death: the mapping of lichens can be considered an image of pollution.

très belle composition et superbe présentation en diagonale
j'aime bien les formes du lichen, les couleurs donne a cette image un air un peu dramatique
photo vraiment très artistique
Passe un bon WE

I enjoy the "Y"-like composition on this photo.
I don't think it is Hypogymnia sp., for me it looks rather like some Parmelia species. Well, but I'm not a lichenoligist. Regards,
