Hello Don. The butterfly is a Scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirus) of the family Papilionidae. This species lives mainly in the central and southern parts of Europe. It flies from April to September. Larval host plant is blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), and other domesticated Prunus species, but also Pyrus, Malus, Sorbus, Crataegus spp.

Hi Don,

A very nice detailed picture you made. It is the Iphiclides podalirius (in Dutch Koningspage).
I have been to the Ardeche too and saw the same butterfly. Later I will post some pictures too.

Thanks,
Hendrik

Great shot of a Pipilionidae!
It's a Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758), from the Papilionidae Papilioninae family.
Also known as Scarce Swallowtail in english.
In Portugal we have the Iphiclides feisthamelii (Duponchel, 1832), similar specie.
