Here is an other picture of the Calopteryx splendens. (In Dutch called Weidebeekjuffer) As you see it is taken at the same river. It is also hard to get this picture. Normally they keep the wings clossed and so now end then they quick spread and close the wings.
here is an other picture.
Keep watching, there are more dragonflies to come!

Additional info found on: www.habitas.org

Locally common in suitable habitats. The flight period is May to August. The two Calopteryx species are the largest of the Irish damselflies. The Banded Demoiselle is found on rivers, streams and drains of moderate to slow-flow that have beds of silt and marginal vegetation. Males perch on bankside vegetation in order to attract females.

C. splendens is very similar to the Beautiful Demoiselle Calopteryx virgo. The males of the two species are easily differentiated as in C. splendens the dark wing pigment forms a broad central band whereas in C. virgo it is more extensive.

KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES

Mature males have a metallic blue-green body with a broad, dark band across the wings
Females have a brilliant metallic green body and the wings are tinted green with a white pseudo-pterostigma

Have also a look at walking on the water and don't forget my Kermit taking swimming lessons!

Hi Hendrick,
This guy is so cool. I love his blue wings.
Nice composition. The red roots make a nice background
Well done

het is een hele moeilijke foto hendrik,
maar al met al heb je er toch nog iets moois van gemaakt. Niet je beste maar in mijn ogen goed genoeg voor de site.
gr, Jaap
