PODARCIS MURALIS - Common Wall Lizard, Lézard des murailles.
DESCRIPTION
The most common lizard in Europe. Male adult size is 18-25cm. Two thirds is represented by the tail. Females are a bit smaller.
Colors vary according to region and individuals. Weight between 4 and 8,5 grams. Life expectancy 5 to 7 years.
HABITAT
Mainly dry and rocky spots, old walls, railroad tracks, houses, where they can hide easily.
HABITS
Comes out and hunts only during the day. Timid but also familial. When disturbed it hides in a crack between stones, If you are patient, it will appear again. Hibernates for a short period and comes out frequently when the sun is warmer. Mating starts a few weeks after the end of hibernation. Females lay 2 or 3 eggs. Young lizards come out generally between end of July and mid-August.
FOOD
Spiders, insects, little gastropods. They also appreciate pulpy fruits like blackberries, sweet bays...
STATUS
Protected in France and Europe (Red List of threatened species)
Red-backed shrike, weasels, stoats and cats are considered as their main predators. Cats are the main reason why we see them rarely in our gardens

Excellent shot! I especially like how the lizard is blurred in the background and that its head is lit by the sunlight, very good composition and well done!

Hello Jean-Michel, nice shot here. I know how hard this little lizards can be to capture so well done there. It was some tricky light you had there and the front rock is overexposed which is a shame. Apart from that, well done.

The most interesting here is I think the shadow and light - part of the animal in shade and the head in sunshine looks great.
The FG is a bit overexposed, but it seems that you had a harsh light then, so still it looks fine.
Overall, very interesting post.

Hello Jean Michael,
Thank you for showing something different to us. There are some problems mentioned above but, the head of the lizard has nice details and colous. With the fine BG.,and the LP frame which is very suitable for a lizard, I think it's a nice shot.

Malgré le rocher surexposé, je suis content de voir ce lézard, Jean-Michel, qui lui n'est pas trés 'exposé' sur TN.
Une composition qui nous laisse entrevoir la taille réelle de l'animal. Une note complète.
