Laurent:
This is the larva of a moth of the family Lasiocampidae - the species eludes me at the moment! Do you know what plant it was on? There's another shot of this species here. It's really annoying me, as it's obviously a widespread species!
The shot is a tiny bit OE, but just moving the levels values in PS or similar will correct it nicely (see workshop - sorry about the double posting - uploaded the wrong version!).

Edit: Pretty sure I've worked out the ID now. It's Lasiocampa quercus - the Oak Eggar. Link here :)

Looks like the head is on the left hand side to me.
