ERINACEUS EUROPAEUS (hedgehog, hérisson)

Who doesn't know about this very useful and familiar animal? It can be found in many gardens in many places of the world.
Feed them and they will become very familiar. But it is not recommended, first, because they are basically wild animals and also because they carry and transmit ringworm, influeza, yellow fever, Salmonella eteritidis, leptospirosis and foot and mouth disease. They carry ticks, mites and fleas in high concentrations.
Nevertheless, if you have one in your garden, it's an interresting critter to observe. We had a nest two years ago in a hidden cavity in a stone wall. I only discovered it after the birth, when the first ones started to come out. I guess they were 4 or 5. They were visible out of the nest at night time only, for about one month before leaving the territory.
This year, we found a young male by himself. He was coming regularly to eat catfood at night and sleeping in a hole under the terrace during the day. To have him come out during daytime, I used their very good sense of smell and put some catfood around. This picture was taken at that moment. He left after two weeks, I hope to find a girlfriend and not to be hit by a car.
If you want to know more about hedgehogs, you'll find very complete information here

I was just about to close down for the night when this little cutie popped up.
Cute factor is high indeed on this one Jean Michel and it is just the last chance for these little guys to find a comfortable winterbed these days. Very good pose, excellent sharpness/dof and very good colours.

I have several in my tiny garden every year because I have plate with water for the birds so they come to drink and feed on the bread. They are really funny. Last summer I heard a lot of noise from under a bush and I knew it was a male chasing a female. After some time the female came out and I waited for the male too but he did not come. Taking a look into the bush I understood - there was one more female in there so he was still busy.

Great low POV and eye contact Jean. Very good sharpness and detail in your closeup also. Well done and Thank you.

Hello Jean Michel,

I have never seen a live hedgehog and this one is captured well.

Interesting features on the body, he looks as though he could be related to the porcupine.

I very much like the low POV and the sharp eye contact.

Wonderful job, thank you.

Hi Jean Michel,
This is a cute little friend you have caught. They use to be very common here but in these days they are quite rare.
Great POV, well composed and very good details.
Excellent work.

Lovely shot Jean Michel,
Good colour, detail and sharpness.
Well composed and good exposure.

Jean Michel bonjour, cette photo de Hérisson est magnifique, l'animal donne l'impression de sortir de l'écran. L'angle de prise de vue est trés bon, au ras du sol !!Mes félicitations Didier.

Jean-Michel, believe me: I've never seen one of them.

Excellent sharpness and details; great catchlight in the eye.

I like composition and pov too. Excellent dof, which highlights the head/eyes.

Nice capture. Fantastic DOF and POV.

Arm still a bit sore so I am keeping the comments short.

Ahhh, a hedgehog. We don't get that many of them on TN. Lovely close up (I hope you're not covered in fleas :-)). Lovely shot Jean Michel. Well done.

I love these little hedhehogs JP, but in NZ they are trying to make them officially known as 'pests'. They suggest that hedgehogs are killing skinks and ground-nesting native birds’ eggs.
I love your little fellow here, he looks so cute. Nice and 'sharp'(!!) too. Well done,
Janice

What an adorable face! You captured the sweet personality of this little guy - the curiosity and courage.
Good on all technical aspects. Heartwarming on the emotional ones. :)
