LARUS RIDIBUNDUS
Black Headed Gull (UK/US), Mouette Rieuse (Fr), Kokmeeuw (NL), Lachmöwe (D), Gaviota Reidora (E), Skrattmas, (Sw), Gabbiano Commune (It).
A very common seabird found on seashores, lakes, inland marshes, rivers and even in some cities. They are very familiar. We have these in the little Vernon sailing harbour on the Seine river. They are very greedy. Just some pieces of old bread in the water, and they start the ballet. It's funny to notice that local ducks are joining the party too, but they remain in the water. It's a kind of naval battle where ducks could be the boats and the gulls the airplanes. These are very fast, with an acrobatic flight.
If you want to know more about this bird, more info are available here in French with a soundtrack. You'll understand why they are also called "laughing gulls" in some countries.

Photographic facts
Burst shot in sport mode. The difficulty with snow white birds on a medium to dark BG is to get a correct exposure balance. Whites generally look flat, overexposed if not burned. I adjusted the shadow/highlights levels first to reduce too high light contrasts, then the correct exposure has been set. As in sport mode, ISO speed is 400, sharpening adds a bit of noise, this has been reduced with the noise filter. This is one way solve these problems. There are certainly other ones working as well, if not better. Postprocessed on PhotoShop CS.

Well done Jean-Michel!
Difficult to balance the whites and shadow details, let alone capture the action sharply in poor light. Where did that artefact diagonal track of white spots (lower left quarter) come from?
Regards, Nigel

Hi Jean Michel,
Very good in flight with great details and nice colours.
The exposure are very good too.
But I'm not sure to use the sport mode, you have no control over the camera, it's set the image to medium size and the ISO to 400. It's better to use manual exposure and set the image qualitet to large especially if you want to some cropping.
Very well done, my friend.

Bonjour Jean Michel, belle composition avec ces deux mouettes qui croisent leur vol !! Leurs positions est trés bonne et le GB egalement. Mes félicitations Didier.

Hi Jean Michael,
WOW! excellent job on this in flight shot. Both gulls are very sharp and frozen perfectly. The colors, composition, and framing, looke perfect to me. Excellent notes.
Scott

Jean-Michel, this is indeed a great shot.

Excellent job when taking the shot and when dealing with PP.

I like composition and exposure; sharpness is great too.

Congratulations.

P.S.: when taking in-flight shots, I generally use manual exposure, continuous shooting and AI SERVO. Have you ever tried these settings? If so, how do you like them?
