Dull weather in Normandy, sort of "in between" before a serious winter. So I went for a look into my archiving separate HDD. I forgot to post this one! Let's go a bit backwards in the sunshine.
------------------------------
BOMBUS TERRESTRIS - Bumblebee - Bourdon (F)- Hymaenopteres order. Apidae family.
These bumblebees are the largest european bumblebees (24-28mm). Other bumblebees (lapidarius, pratorum, agrorum) are smaller (14-20cm). They can be differenciated by their clear stripes placement and colors varying from yellow to brown/orange on the thorax and abdomen. Females emerge in spring, workers later. Only females survive to winter. They make their nests in the ground, usually in old mouse nests, and preferably facing south to keep the nest warm. They have short tongues, compared to the honeybees, so they tend to forage on flowers with short corollas and daisy-type flowers. However they are accomplished nectar robbers. When they find a flower where the nectar is too deep down the corolla for them to reach they bite a hole near the base of the corolla and push their tongue through and drink the nectar. This shot shows very well their biting mandibles. They are very useful pollinators of fruit trees, raspberries and blueberries. They are impressive by their size and noise, but there is no risk to get close because they have no sting (except queens, and they rarely use it). As with all apidae, you have males, workers and queens.

Beau travail!

Hi Jean Michel, the colours are very good and I love the amount of detail you have captured in the bees head, especiall the mouthparts. A greater DOF here would have enabled you to get the eye very sharp. I would have been tempted to crop out a little of the left hand side to reduce the distraction of the plant. Very good photo and excellent note. Thanks for posting.

great job

This is an impressive macro shot. It shows a large amount of detail. The colors are nice too. Great shot!

Nice catch , technically and artistically both, I use to have many of this back home in my yard, we use to call them ,,gypsy bees,,.

Superb close-up Jean Michel. Amazing sharpness and details and the colours are really great. Very clever use of limited dof leaving a perfectly blurred background.

Wow fantastic. very good DoF. nice colour and very good composition.

Una gran macro Jean Michel con admirables nitidez en la parte anterior del insecto.
Un excelente POV y composicion... coincido con Paul que un recorte del lado izquierdo mejoraría la presentacion general.

A great macro Jean Michel with admirable clearness in the front of the insect.
An excellent POV and composition... I agree with Paul who a cut of the left side would improve the general presentation.
