MARCASSITE:
The marcasite is a frequent metal mineral. It constitutes dimorphous orthorhombic pyrite. This mineral is formed at low temperature under very acid conditions and meets mainly in the sedimentary contexts (limestones, marls, chalk) and the hydrothermal seams. It also frequently results from the transformation of the pyrhotite. Of metallic lustre, its color on fresh break is white of tin transfering quickly with the yellow bronzes by exposure to the air. The marcasite meets in spherical nodules fibroradiés (frequent in the sedimentary formations) and out of tabular crystals on {010} frequently twinned on {101} giving by repetition of the facies in cockscombs.
