Ferns are a very ancient family of plants : early fern fossils predate the beginning of the Mesozoic era, 360 million years ago. They are older than land animals and far older than dinosaurs. They were thriving on Earth for two hundred million years before the flowering plants evolved.

As we know them now, most ferns are leafy plants that grow in moist areas under forest canopy. They are "vascular plants" with well-developped internal vein-structures that promote the flow of water and nutrients. Unike the other vascular plants (flowering plants and conifers), where the adult plants grow immediately from the seed, ferns reproduce from spores and an intermediate plant stage called gametophyte.

ferns are relatively delicate plants that only grow in areas where there are suitably moist conditions. They favour sheltered areas under the forest canopy, along creeks and streams and other sources of permanent moisture. They cannot grow readily in hot dry areas like flowering plants and conifers.

I don't know which species of fern this is. I found it deep in the forest, and it was only 30cm high. But I know that by the end of summer, they will be almost as tall as I am.

I just cropped and sharpened the photo, and added a frame, but I didn't touch the colors, they are all natural.

Hi Valerie,
What a beautiful green color! The compsition with the slightly tilted fern is very good. I do like the details showing in the curl of the fern, but I am not that sure about the sharpness enhancement. I am currently at work and want to see it again at home on a better monitor. I do like the light and bright b/g
TFS,
Niek

-back home, and it looks much better on this monitor and the sharpness is perfect

Salut Valerie!

Hi Valerie
This is just an amazing close-up of the developing fern leave. I love it. The composition is great, the colours are amazingly natural, the details are brilliant, and the exposure was spot-on.
Unfortunately, within a couple of minutes I'll be leaving for Pretoria (±1400 km round trip for the weekend). So, I do not have time to do a proper critique and there will be no further TN activities this weekend, but well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Thanks for posting, have a great weekend.

Hi Valerie,
strikingly beautiful document of growth in nature, taken with great empathy. Slight dust removal or further softening on background might be tried, but all together: colours, details, composition, light - just perfect!
Thnak you. Best regards,

Hi Valerie
Fern are common to my village. We have two kinds of ferns the gentle and the wild.
In my village we called it gentle fern and its verry tall. The wild is short, dense and more beautiful in my opinion
I pass meny hours inside the forest resting on them.
Very beautiful plants.
Excellent shot of this litle fern which trying to grow fast.

Emmanuel

i see your love of life here...so delicate and embryonic...how did it all start if it looks like this now...
love that curled shape

This is amazing, what a fabulous stage of development you caught this in. I love your note too.
Did you know that when these ferns are just coming out of the ground you can eat them? Soak in water for a few days first and rinse many times. We call them Fiddle Heads, Yummy!

Hi, Valérie
Lovely shot you got here.
The vertical crop is very appropriate and the green a delight.
The bohek is perfect!
(if this is what you achieve with a P&S, I can imagine the results you will get with a DSLR)

Hello,
I like it wery much in your portfolio, because i hve never seen this type of plant, it's look like a seahorse, and i love them very much, and the tone of green is well done, because the background and the main object are same colour, what a good contrast it is! Congrats...
bye
Arda

Hello Valerie,
Lovely details in this all green plant!
To see them unflod is a pleasant display of shapes and lines...
