Arum maculatum

I found this flower in the forest next to my village. It was growing near the river, the whole floor is covered with them in some areas. Very beautiful flowers.

Arum maculatum is a member of the plant family Araceae. It is a common plant in north temperate Europe and is also known as Lord and Ladies and Cuckoo pint.

The purple spotted leaves appear in the spring followed by the flowers borne on a type of inflorescence called a spadix. The purple spadix is partially enclosed in a pale green spathe or leaf-like hood.
The root-tube may be very large and is used to store starch. In mature specimens the tuber may be as much as 400 mm below ground level.

This species is found in woods and along shaded ditches and hedgerows on calcareous soil. Lords and ladies flowers in April through to May, and is a perennial growing from a tuber underground. Perennial means plants that live for at least three seasons, and after an initial period they produce flowers once a year.

In autumn, it produces a cluster of dark orange berries grouped together at the top of a stem (you may have a look at my workshop to see the flower at this stage).

Wild arum is poisonous and it is better to avoid contact with it. However, in earlier times, the roots were used as a substitute for arrowroot although it has a bitter taste. The roots were more commonly used as a source of starch for collars and ruffs, even though the toxic juice left the poor laundresses’ hands terribly blistered.

Lords and ladies is a very common plant and not considered at threat. As this species is common across most of its range, there are currently no conservation programmes associated with it.

Hi Valerie
Wow, what spectacular colour? This is an excellent capture and you really managed to bring out the best of this flower with the available light you had.
The colours are just stunning and the texture of the flower is clearly visible due to the sharpness of the details. You presented it very well in this beautiful composition and the frame is absolutely complimentary to the flower.
The OOF BG further enhances the flower very nicely, but here might be the only aspect that you could have addressed a little more in your PP. I think if you selected the background and applied the 'Gaussian Blur' filter to it at ±0.8 and then did some noise reduction on the BG only it would have improved the BG even more. However, this photo is beautiful as it is so I am not busy nit picking, but merely giving you a suggestion on possible further optimisation.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
PS. This is really one of those photos that make you feel like you wish it was your own.

Hola Valerie,
Muy bien iluminada planta, que deja ver los detalles y la textura de la misma. El nombre "Señores y señoritas" es algo incompresible to me. ¿Tienes idea de su sentido?

Hello Valerie,

Very nice composition here! I like the way you framed and present your picture (vertically). Details are awesome and the colours looks very natural! Great pov, bg and dof! Very well done! TFS,

Michel

Hello Valerie,
I really like the texture and sharpness of this picture. The color also fascinating. Very well done and TFS.

Hi Valerie,
very interesting and pretty shot of the Arum blossom. Wide spread and quite common, the blossoms seem to be open for one day only, and they are very well hidden in the shadow of forests so they remain undiscovered most of them, whereas the bright red fruits may be seen very frequently in Autumn.
So the picture does not fail to surprise and excite most of us as being something very uncommon.
Very well taken, and very good notes, too.
By the way, I took some pictures of a closely related species a few days ago in Vienna, I intended to post them in a few days, and I still do - so thank you for opening this season's chapter on Arum maculatum / Arum alpinum!
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Valerie,
What do write when you see the critique from Loot. More then I second that is what I can do.
I just love the photo and the colors. I've never seen it before, so thanks for showing it to me.
The only recommendation I have is to use a little black line between the photo and the first line of the frame so to seperate the green color of the plant from the green color of the frame.
TFS,
Niek

Hey Valerie, I have these in my garden! (Got one for the scavenger hunt over on Trek Lens right now) Great color. Interesting note (now I know they grow wild and have learned they are almost considered a nuisance in N. America. Oh well, I love their foliage that stays bright green all winter!). The only thing I might suggest at all, is maybe trying to get closer to better capture the veins in the leaf & crop the bottom just a tad more. TFS! Randy

A very interesting flower Valerie. One of my favorite colours too. A nice closeup with lots of detail.

Is that your horse on your profile?? He look very tall. What breed is he? Janice :)

Joli cliché pour cet Arum. J'aime bien les couleurs et la netteté. Pour chipoter je dirai qu'il est domage que le sommet soit tronqué. Compliments Valéry !

this is a most intriguing flower: looks very similar to the Jack in the Pulpit that grows here in Canada, which is also a member of the Araceae / Arum family. I love the colours of yours and your photo is also superb: great POV, DOF and composition.
