Coenobita clypeatus is the scientific name of the pagurus..
This specimen was on a beach in the south of Martinique. I put myself à flat belly to take it on the level of the ground.
The hermit-crab is member of a family of crustacés marine and terrestrial connected which has the particularity to be placed in given up shells. The caractéristiques ones of their abdomen (soft, curved and twisted) enable them to adapt to the whorls of the borrowed shell. The hermit-crab are also equipped with abdominal appendices, whose anatomy enables them to maintain the shell firmly. They have a réduit number of locomotor legs and their right grip, élargie, serve à to block entered of the shell in front of a threat, predator or rival. The hermit-crab must indeed often fight for the possession of a new shell, because they must find some more roomy after each moult. The alive hermit-crab on the firm ground have gills functioning like lungs.
