Pyronia tithonus (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Satyrinae):
Hatching caterpillars. - A picture of the pre-digital-era.

The picture shows different stages of hatching Pyronia tithonus caterpillars. Some empty egg shells are seen, partially consumed as a first meal by the 'newborns'. On the left side, two eggs are seen with a narrow slit produced by the caterpillars inside. From here, it will take about further 15 to 30 min to the stage seen in the middle of the picture, where the small larva tries to leave the egg.
The diameter of the eggs is about 1 mm and the freshly hatched larva (when not stretched) measures 1,5 to 2,0 mm.
The Pyronia tithonus-butterfly can be seen on several pictures posted to TrekNature. The species is widely distributed in Europe, Turkey and regions around the Black Sea.
Females attach their eggs on the food plants, i.e., Poa and other grasses.

An Olympus Autobellows was used.

The slide was scanned with Reflecta silver (1800 dpi).

REFERENCES: There are no reference books showing so-called first instar larvae of butterflies.

hervorragende Detailwiedergabe, die Eihüllen wirken sehr plastisch in ihrer glänzenden Transparenz vor neutralgrauem Hintergrund.
