Great Tiger Moth or Garden Tiger (Arctia caja)

Yesterday it was the first sunny and warm day since almost one month. So we cut grass to make hay for the rabbits, and I found this wonderful caterpillar hidden in the grass. I didn't have my camera with me, so I took it home to take some photos, and after that I put it in the grass again, on a meadow not far from where I found it.

Description: Wingspan of tha adult moth is 50-78mm. A colourful, distinctive species. Both sexes similar in appearance. Forewings are dark chocolate brown with ochreous white streaks and patches, which are variable in size and shape. Hindwings are orange-red with a series of deep blue-centred, black spots. Abdomen is red with black bars on the dorsal side. The scarlet hindwings are a distinctive feature of this species, which it readily displays when disturbed.
I have no photo of an adult moth, so if you want to see what it looks like you can have a look at this web site : http://www.habitas.org.uk/moths/species.asp?item=6143

Key Identification Features:
Difficult to confuse with any other species
Brown and white markings on forewings
Red hindwings with dark blue spots

Flight Period: From late June until the latter half of August.

Status: Widespread and commonly encountered throughout all counties.

Ecology: Found in a wide variety of habitats including woodland, bogs, coastal heaths and dunes. The adults are seldom found by day but appear frequently at light. Many of the records are of larvae, which are commonly referred to as 'woolly bears' or 'granny greybeards'. These are often seen by non-naturalists, wandering across paths and roads in search of a suitable pupation site. The distinctive larvae feed from September until June of the following year on a wide variety of wild and garden plants. It overwinters as a larva.

World Distribution: Across the northern Palaearctic region.

j'aime bien cette petite chenille poilue sur sa feuille. L'exposition est bonne, les couleurs sont vives et agréables, la netteté est aussi tip-top. Certains disent que le 18-55mm est nul, vous prouvez le contraire...
Compliments Valérie.

Hi Valerie,

A belated welcome to TN... I guess. :)

You have a nice portfolio and show lots of talent. I chose this photo cause I love hairy bugs. I find it almost impossible to believe you got this quality photo from the "kit" lens. It is a great shot, very well done.

That's the height of 'hairiness', Valerie!
Superb image with sharp focus and great colours.
Very thoughtful of you to return the caterpillar to its habitat after taking it home for a photo session.
TFS.

Excellent close-up - the details are fabulous! Very nice colours and POV.

Great subject Valérie! Hairy and cute, looks like a puffy cat! Great colours and focusing! I like this shot! That leaf is great! Absolutely this is your arrangement! But really good choice! Congrats!
Ersin

Chère Valerie, J'ai beaucoup aimé cette chenille qui me paraît plus un petit souris ou un trop petit mammifère...Vous avez pris une très belle image, si j'était vous, j'allais pris ma caméra aussi vite!

Hi Valerie,
Excellent macro. You've captured the intricate details of the caterpillar very well. I really like the composition and the colours, especially that lovely green and the orange. Well seen!
