Great green bush-cricket (Tettigonia viridissima)
Insects ~ Order of Orthoptera ~ Family of Tettigoniidae

I found this big grasshopper in my garden, yesterday, in the evening. It was eating my garden peas. It is really an impressive animal, as it was approximately 10 cm long - the biggest grasshopper I ever saw. I removed it from my peas and took some photos, then it flew away to my neighbour's garden. I know that I have cut the antennas of the grasshopper, but I am still quite pleased with this shot.

It is considered by most scientist that the Orthoptera arose in the late Upper Carboniferous more than 300 million years ago.

The Orthoptera are a group of large and easily recognised insects which includes the Grasshoppers, Locusts, Groundhoppers, Crickets, Bush-crickets, Mole-crickets and Camel-crickets as well as some lesser groups. There are about 20 000 known species distributed around the world, some species are very wide spread and a couple occur in both the old world and the new world.

They are described as hemimetabolous (having nymphs that look like small adults and no pupa), medium or large insects that are usually winged as adults but may also be wingless. They have a large pronotum (the plate covering the first thoracic segment or prothorax) and enlarged (often greatly so)hind femur which are used for jumping.

The Orthoptera can be found in most habitats : in grasslands and forests, on sea-shores, in bogs and marshes, in caves, in desert and semi-desert, and even under ground. Many species are arboreal (live in trees) and some are quite happy swimming on or even under the water.

I hope you will like it !

Hola Valerie,

Hi Valerie,
This is a big grasshopper, I hope he didn't eat all of your peas!! ;)
Good detail, colours and sharpness. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV. I like the framing. It's a shame the antennae are cut short, but you are right, it is still a shot to be very pleased with.
Howards workshop is very good, and he makes a good point about the natural movement of the eye from left to right when looking at pictures.

Thanks for posting, have a great week.

And of course, I wish France the very best of luck on Wednesday evening ;)

Hi Valerie,
Nice shot of this huge grasshopper. I can't imagine seeing one that size. Excellent detail and colours, perfect exposure and very good use of a shallow DOF. I think the crop is a little tight but a minor nit.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Valerie,
it's a good close-up with nice colours avery good details,
Good POV and DOF.
A bit lack of contrast maybe, Howard did a good WS.
Well done.

Hello Valérie!
i like crickets and grasshoppers really! i always look for theme in my garden or any natural places! But in my opinion they are so hard subjects to taking beautifully! No, no, they can be easily photographed but i mentioned about taking beautifully. They are not so photogenic, so i have only a post with grasshopper as a subject! As for the photo, this one is great indeed, despite not so coloured one! pov, pose, soft colours, sharpness, i like all of them :-) Your different subjects are always welcome! Keep it up Valérie :-) Thank you!

Hello Valerie, nice shot. It looks big! Good details and exposure. Hard one to compose with those long antennae and legs, I think you did a good job. Well done.

Hello Valerie,
Good point of view and a well composed presentation!
Your little green friend is captured with sharp fine details, a fine natural colour palette...
DOF is effective and the insect stands out well in spite of the green background!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hallo Valerie
What a fine looking Great green bush cricket. The detail of this bee is just stunning and a real eye catcher. There is hardly enough space on my screen to make it fit. The detail of the grasshopper's paws, wings and eye is great and its body looks overloaded. The wings itself looks like a leaf and it will be a wonderful camouflage again danger. A wonderful close up and a pleasure to look at. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
