IS IT YOU FLYING LIKE A ROCKET IN MY BACK, Mr BLUE TIT?
If birds were able to talk, that's what this sparrow would have said, looking at a potential danger. It's interesting to observe that on the same spot were I put food in winter, there are actually 4 different breeds landing. Those who dare the most and are really familiar are the Blue Tits, chasing the three others. Then, you have the Red Robin, who comes often and doesn't wait to be chased to take off. The Great Tit is less frequent and is very cautious about any presence. He never stays long. Finally, you have the sparrow, a bit larger than the three other ones, but who's a coward. He's waiting with his gang in the bushes and invades the spot only when there's nobody around. They eat like pigs, spreading crumbs all over the spot. In fact, it's not stupid, they prefer to pick what they find on the ground.
ID FACTS
PASSER DOMESTICUS - Moineau domestique (F) - sparrow (UK/US).
Well-known in many parts of the world, this little chap lives always close to humans. Sparrows don't like woods and countryside. For ages, they have been considered as a plea, being lazy, greedy, living on food accumulated by humans. You'll find them in cities, villages and farms where they are never far from granaries, pigeon lofts, farmyards, etc.
--------------------------------
Lenght : 14 cm - non-migrant - nests in holes in walls, apertures under a roof, and sometimes a strawball suspended under a bush - Females lay two or three times a year 4 to 6 eggs from april to august - food: grain and crumbs found on the ground.
----------------------------------------------
Shot in TIFF mode - speed priority - centered compensated metering - ISO 200 - auto white balance - focal lenght 48,5mm + 1,7x teleconverter.
PP: Cropped, levels, USM, (150 - 0,3). NeatImage noise reducing, saved in jpg at site size.

Beautiful bird,great details.Liked light,colour&contrast of b/g.

Très belle photo Jean Michel. La mise-au-point est parfaite, le sujet bien positionné dans le cadre et le fond met le tout en valeur. Votre note est également très intéressante. J'aurais peut-être coupé un peu la partie du haut (2 ou 3 cm).
Bravo!

Hi Jean Michel
I had a hearty chuckle just now, reading your note! I know these riffraff SO well, and they do eat as pigs. And yes, they prefer taking the food off the gound, rather than off the board.
The more you feed them the more they will get used to you. I also found that our "robin" equivalent is easily spooked.
Nice shot of this common birdie, good details TFS

A Sparrow. Probably most common bird in Poland. So what? I love sparrows and your picture too. Very good work Jean Michel :-)

This photo is so clear and bright, and the note very informative with a touch of humor. I love this little birds portrait!

Wonderfully sharp shot and composition. I agree with the words in the heading as well.

Very well done and thanks for posting

I love the perspective on this one although I would have lowered the shot a little with less space above its head. Excellent detail on bird and good use DOF. Good post.

Tack sharp... Excellent compo and an interesting POV, which works. This must be one of the nicest Sparrow shots on the site. Great work on this masterpiece.

Very good shot Jean Michel.

Superbe, Jean-Michel!
Merci
