[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I found this moth early in the morning, on the fence that is running around my house. I know that there should be no visible fences or things like that on TN, but unfortunately the moth didn't listen when I asked him (or her) to go on a tree ! :-)

I had time to take a lot of photos of him before my young kitten made him fly away. This is the best one.

Silver Y Moth (Autographa gamma)

The silver Y moth, common in gardens and throughout the countryside, is on the wing from May to October. It has pale brown wings with a distinctive silvery white Y-shaped marking on each forewing. This moth is well-camouflaged and thus hard to see when resting, but it is active by day as well as dusk, when it feeds on flowers.

Mainly a migrant moth, it is most abundant in southern and eastern England. Adults can be found from May, or occasionally earlier, often in large numbers. There are usually two or three broods a year. The early stages are killed by frost in the autumn, but some adults may overwinter. The caterpillars can be seen from June to September. They are smooth and any shade of green, from pale to dark olive. They feed on low growing plants and can sometimes be a pest on cultivated crops and garden plants, especially kale and peas. Pupation takes place in loose cocoons among leaves.

The original picture was vertical, and the moth had its head down, but I rotated the photo as I think it looks much better like that.

I hope you will like it !

Hello Valerie,
Nice shot of this moth. For me the original vertical view of the moth may give a more natural feel. Anyway, this is a fine picture to appreciate. TFS

Hi Valerie, nice moth. I have also seen them many times but unfortunately don't know the I.D. Like you say if it had been on the bark of a tree you wouldn't see it, a great defense. I think this one must have been a bit thick as it isn't blending in at all. Great lighting, details and colours, well captured and TFS.

Hi Valerie
Nice shot of this nice moth. It's very common here but it's rather shy so it's not easy to make good picture. Thanks
