This is one of the most common butterfly in the Alsacian meadows - also one of the easiest to photograph as he always sits on the same flower for a long time, not moving. So I could make lots of wonderful photos of him, this is my favourite.

Usually Marbled White have black markings on the wings, but this one has light brown markings, it's the first time I see one like this.

Marbled White (Melanargia galathea)

Class : Insects
Order : Lepidoptera
Family : Nymphalidae

The Marbled White is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Found across most of Europe (but not in Scandinavia), north Africa and as far east as Iran. The late twentieth century has seen an expansion of its range in most of these countries.

They are a very common sight in all unimproved grasslands and meadows, and most of times he can be seen on purple flowers like thistles - on my photo he is sitting on a clover, though.

Eggs are laid on the wing or from brief perches on grass stems and are just sprinkled among the grass stems. Upon hatching the larvae immediately enters hibernation and only feed the following spring when the fresh growth occurs - it feeds on various grasses, but it is thought that Red Fescue is essential in their diet. They are a lime green with a dark green line running down the middle of their back. Pupation takes place at ground level in a loose cocoon. Adults emerge in July.

On a good site in warm, sunny weather thousands can be seen gently fluttering amongst the grass heads.

Hi Valerie,
A well framed butterfly on clover!
Good point of view, macro work well done...
Very nice details in the insect, maybe I miss a tad of contrast..?
Good natural colours in a well composed presentation!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Valerie,
One of most beautiful butterflies (for me). Great POV and composition. I did a little WS for you.
TFS!

Hello Valérie,
Beautiful butterfly and i've not seen it. Superb bg, true pov, great framing all are going on. Maybe a little bit sharpness on the butterfly coulb be useful.
Have a great day!
Ersin

Bonjour Valerie!
Still no sign of Swallowtails? Very nice macro my friend, little soft but this softness is perfect for picture's mood. Strange colours - no blue 'eyes' on wings and brown shades. Maybe it is old or maybe it is female :-) Anyway - I like composition, light and soft mood of this photo.

Hi Val, I can see how it gets called Marble White. The wings do look very 'marbled'. It does look a little soft and I like Luke's workshop giving it more contrast. Still a lovely composition, TFS

Hola Valerie,

Amicalement

A simply lovely capture, Valerie. (And this one measn something to me as it would have been taken not too far from where my daughter lives:)
The subject is beautifully sharp and the BG nicely oof. Excellent composition too.

JN.
