I found this big guy - or big girl - on a flower pot in my garden, yesterday. He was really huge, the biggest moth I ever saw. He was sleeping with wings totally closed, so I touched him gently with my finger, and he slightly opened his wings, showing me his colorful abdomen. It was really a very impressive insect even for someone like me who is not afraid of insects. :-)

To have an idea of the size, you can have a look at my worskshop - I measured this big moth. :-)

Quality of the photo is not the best, because my Canon 350D has some problems and is now beeing repaired, so I had to use my old pocket camera. And the BG is not very natural, its my flower pot, I know it would have been better if the moth was sitting on a tree or a leaf. But I thought the photo was worth to be posted, as it shows a very interesting animal.

I hope you will like it !

Convolvulus Hawkmoth (Agrius convolvuli)

Class : Insects
Order : Lepidoptera
Family : Sphingidae

The Convolvulus Hawkmoth is large enough to be mistaken for a bat in the poor light of dusk - it has a wingspan up to 10 or 12cm.
Breeding in Africa the new brood often migrates northwards and appears in Europe during end of summer and autumn. As the name implies, the foodplant is Bindweed but it is said that it is also attracted well to Nicotiana.
This insect is known for his very long 'proboscis'. It is 10cm long (longer than the body), which allows him to drink nectar of even the deepest flowers. When he feeds he is hovering over the flowers without resting on them, just like the more common Hummingbird Hawkmoth.

Salut Valerie
Great capture of this very interesting moth. You were lucky to get to see the lovely colours on it's abdomen. Sharpness is good despite your other camera being repaired!
Good job :-)

A great moth you captured Valérie! What a great and interesting colours are together on this moth. Besides it is a great composition with that brick red coloured bg! Frame is well chosen too and so this post is just wonderful :-)

As for the workshop, did you tell him "wait a minute, i get back in a minute with the ruler".

Bravo and TFS!

This is a very nice species (and picture of it). I never saw it but I would like to. Its camouflage colours are not very efective, when sitting on a flower pot :-). Thanks,
Paul

Hi Valerie,
These Moths are huge! It's a beautiful shot, the clarity and detail are quite amazing, giving us a great view of his (or her :-)) markings. Great exposure and really well composed too, I like the lines of the flower pot and the way you've angled the Moth also. I sometimes feel as if I'm not writing a 'real' critique if I don't offer some kind of advice or see something that can be improved, but there really is nothing I can say here, it's an excellent shot.
Regards,
Adrian

Alors on ne prend pas soin de son 350D ;-) Vous avez quand même fait un cliché intéressant ! Cette espèce est belle et le pot de fleur ne gâche pas la photo à mon humble avis.
Compliments à Valérie et au P71 :-))

Very good detail, light, color, and DOF in this moth Valerie..I like the alternating red, black, and white stripes I see on the abdomen here..
Well done & TFS!

Beautiful Sphingidae!
Great composition and point of view from above.
Very well done.
Thanks for sharing.
My best regards,

Filipe.

Hallo Valerie,
