Geranium bronze Cacyreus marshalli
I uploaded a photo of this small butterfly with open wings yesterday - this is the same butterfly but a side view [the notes are pretty much the same]
The Geranium Bronze is native to South Africa and has been introduced to Europe via the island of Majorca and it has now become established in the some of the countries round the Mediterranean. It was initially a passenger on culivated Pellargonium sp. the flowers colloquially known as Geraniums - hence the name.
The caterpillars have turned out to be a pest causing a lot of damage to cultivated plants although some commentators are suggesting that the fact that they seem very dependant on Pellargonium plants is a good thing, as they would do a lot more damage if thay were less fussy.
In South Africa these caterpillars do less damage as they have local predators that keep the numbers down and apparently fewer predators in Europe. Some have even been seen as far north as England.
This butterfly was feeding on lavender flowers in the centre of Nice. |

Hallo Alison,
a well composed picture showing this newcomer. Colours and point of view are nice.
The presentation can be slightly improved - I think - by image processing. I tried a workshop (which I will post later due to limit) and hope that you will like the result.
Best wishes,
Peter
I can't describe the beauty of this butterfly in words! The colors are bright and natural and composition and POV look very good! The photo is pretty sharp and with great DOF! Outstanding job! TFS!

Eddie
