Old World Swallowtai (Papilio machaon)

I finally found my Swallowtail... I was taking some photos of my village from the top of a hill when I saw something flying around me... A butterfly... Yellow and black... Very big... When I realized it was a Swallowtail I begun to feel really happy, I was looking for this butterfly for so long !

I do not have much time today, so if you want some infos on Swallowails, you can have a look at this page
http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Europe/France/photo65905.htm

This swallowtail was missing big parts of his wings, I don't know what happened to him, but he was still very fast and very agile, the broken wing didn't seem to bother him. Colors on his wings had also faded away, usally there are blue spots on the hind wings but this one didn't have them anymore - he must be very old, and close to the end of his life.

There are less and less butterflies in the meadows and in the gardens, and those who are still there often look ragged and worn out. I think the butterfly season will soon be over, it's so sad...

I know that one of the rules in photography is : not to put your subject in the center of your photo. ere I had to do it because there was a plastic bag and an empty beer bottle around the butterfly, I had to crop the photo this way to make them disappear. I hope you will still like the photo ! :-)

Hi Valerie,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
superb colours, lighting and exposure. Well composed, excellent notes and well framed. You really shouldn't leave beer bottles on the ground, they might tip over and you could spill some!!!!
Thanks for posting, have a great week my friend.

Hello Valérie!
i'm happy to see your first swallowtail. It is a poor one, but i'm happy it is still flying! Very rarely seen scene with that losses. Great sharpness and pov!
Thank you!
Ersin

Hola Valerie,

Oh Dear! poor little soul! I am sorry for the little one, but I must say that you have captured it well: excellent composition, sharpness, colour, DOF and POV. TFS

Hi Valerie,
Seem that butterflies do not need a whole lot of wing space to fly. Those beautiful wings may be for shwoing off then. A beautiful picture and well composed. Very well done and TFS.

Les couleurs sont très belles avec de beaux détails, la présentation est est belle.
Il ne manque pas selement un bout d'aile mais il lui manque la queue de droite.

Bonjour Valerie,
it looks beautiful even with the broken wing. Great POV and very good detail. You did well on the composition, the damaged beauty stands out very well from the OOF BG.
TFS..Sky

Good picture, the animal may have met a bird, or a mower...

Paul

Hi Valerie,
good picture, fascinating and moving story!
Very interesting to read about the ability to fly very fast in spite of its damaged wings. What a perfect wing construction of nature. Very well decribing lively story.
According to my records, butterfly season is not likely to end before mid October in central Europe, and there may be many fresh butterflies and moths to be seen in September.
Thank you! Best regards.
Peter

Très belle photo, mais il est blessé a l’aile, l’avez vous soigné, je blague car si cela était possible je crois que l’on essayerait .La netteté et la lumière sont bonnes aussi. Thomas
