English name : Old world swallowtail – Scientific name : Papilio machaon – Family : Papilionidae.
---
Description : This striking butterfly is yellow with black wing and vein markings and a wingspan of 8 to 10cm. The hind wings of both sexes have a pair of protruding tails which give the butterfly its common name. Just below each tail is a red eye spot.
Habits : the butterfly has a strong and fast but frequently breaks off to hover over flowering herbsand sip nectar. It frequents the alpine meadows and hillsides and is fond of 'hilltopping'. In lower elevations it can also be seen visiting gardens.
Life cycle and foodplants : there are usually two to three broods in a year, but in northern areas the species may be single-brooded. In some places like the UK some will pupate and emerge in the same year and others will overwinter as pupae before emerging the following year a situation known as being partially double brooded.
Eggs : females lay eggs singly on plants of the umbeliferae family.
Caterpillar : the Swallowtail caterpillar spends the first part of its life with the appearance of a bird dropping, an effective defence against predators. As the caterpillar grows larger it becomes green with black and orange markings. The caterpillar still has a defence against predators in the form of an organ called an osmeterium which consists of retractable, fleshy projections behind its head that can release a foul smell.
Foodplants : unlike other swallowtails, this species specialises in using plants of family Umbelliferae.
In the UK Milk Parsley which is also known as Marsh Hog's Fennel Peucedanum palustre, is the only caterpillar food plant used.
The foodplants of the Swallowtail in Europe, Asia and North America are varied, it uses a wide variety of Umbellifers including wild carrot Daucus carota, wild angelica Angelica sylvestris, fennel Foeniculum vulgare and hogweeds Heracleum spp.

I choose f10 to include in focus all this big species, perhaps f6.3 were enough for more blurred background...

I hope that colors are good because since I bought a laptop-PC I am lost with its "Cristal-bright" LCD screen...

I caught this butterfly on the top of Mont lachat at 2100m during my vacation. In fact, they were 3 and they always fought to defend their territory... I have also redraw (with my old Micrografx Picture Publisher 8) its right wing because this fighter was damaged...

Hi Christian,

Great shot, lovely POV and good composition, the pose is excellent and I think it looks like a kite. The detail is lovely and sharp, the colours are lovely and complimented by the blurred BG.

Bonsoir Christina !

Hello Christian,
You were lucky to be able to take such a fine shot, as most swallowtails never hold their wings steady: they usually flutter them. Perhaps the temperature at that altitude made it hold its wings open to receive the warmth of the sun. I agree with your thoughtds about the aperture in order to have a more blurred background, but it's a fine shot anyway.
TFS, regards, Ivan

Hi Ricardo

This truely is a superb shot!
Excellent POV, crispy clear details and great exposure. I'm not probably the best man to say it, but to me the colors look fine...more than fine, actually :)
You really captured it in a nice pose as well and the F-stop, although you say it a bit too big, did leave room for too many details, so the BG isn't distracting.
Very well done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Christian,
so much luck to see that beautiful butterfly.
I love this shot, excellent captured.
I also saw one in Italy - but only far away and I couldn't make a single shot. So I'm happy to see it so close on your shot, thanks and bye

Hi Christian.
You have captured a very nice specimen of Swallowtail. I like the natural colours of this insect, its pose and composition of the shot. You have selected DOF and POV very well. As a result BG is well blurred and good underline the butterfly. TFS and my best regards,
Alexei.

Hello Christian!

Perfect work. I really like composition - this big butterfly sat down in perfect place. Great colours and details, excellent note. 2100m? Without elevator ;-) ?

Very nice capture.
Very nice reconstructing of the damaged wing. Unfortunately it happens so often that those reprocessing is too obvious. On your pic, it just looks so natural.
(would have been interesting to post a workshop with the original wing-broken butterfly)

Hello Christian,
well captured swallowtail in iconic resting pose, well composed. Good colours and details indeed!
Interesting to read about the location where you captured this elegant daily migrant.
2006 seems to have been a very good year for P. machaon, and I made similar observations of these pretty and powerful fliers to go unusually high this year in their hilltopping habit.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hello Christian,
The butterfly is very well framed!
DOF spot on giving excellent details, and the colours are reproduced in a convincing manner...
The few elements in the composition work well together and creates a dynamic feeling!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Very nice capture, I love how you filled the frame with this beatiful swallowtail all with a nice soft background. :)

Perfect! Lovely details and colors of this colorful critter. Very well done, Christian.

Missed this one, Christian, as it is a well composed image of a beautiful butterfly. The butterfly is depicted very sharp.
