A second picture of the nice Praying Mantis who posed for me last friday - I was so happy to find her ! lasr picture she was on the lawn, but here she climbed on the old log that is standing in front of the house. She stayed at this place for almost one hour, in the last rays of sun. She cleaned here legs, on after another, just in front of my camera, not bothered at all by my presence. A great moment for an insect lover like me ! :-)

The DOF is a bit too shallow, asomepart of the insect are not in focus, but I really like this insect and I really wanted to share it with you.

European Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa)

Class : Insects
Order : Mantodea
Family : Mantidae

A praying mantis, or praying mantid, is the common colloquial name for an insect of the order Mantodea. Often mistakenly spelled preying mantis (a tempting mistake, as they are notoriously predatory) they are in fact named for the typical "prayer-like" stance. The word mantis derives from the Greek word Mantes for prophet or fortune teller.

There are approximately 2,300 species in the order Mantodea world-wide; most are tropical or subtropical, but several species live in temperate climates such as that of the northern United States, central Europe, and Siberia. Most Praying mantids belong to the family Mantidae.

Praying mantids are one of the few insects that can turn their heads. They have excellent vision, and hunt insects (and sometimes small vertebrates) by stealth and a rapid striking attack. No mantis is poisonous and they present no threat to humans.

The European Mantis "Mantis religiosa" (on my photo) is one of the most common species of this order. Originating in southern Europe, the European Mantis was introduced to North America in 1899 on a shipment of nursery plants. Now they are found all over north-eastern America (east of the Mississippi River) to the Pacific North West. The European mantis is usually 2-3 inches in length, and has shades of bright green to tan. It can be distinguished easily by a black-ringed spot beneath the fore coxae.

Bonjour Valérie,
Belle photo d'un insecte spectaculaire que l'on ne voit pas souvent dans cette position. Les couleurs sont remarquables, tout comme la profondeur de champ. Merci pour le partage.

One of the most attractive insects for me Valerie... and here you present it with good POV.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, sharpness, focus, color, framing, lighting, notes.

I like it: background.

I don't like it: the lack of the values of the image.

Interesting post and notes... don't forget to include the values please.
Best regards... Ricardo

Hello Valerie

Splendid portrati of this very beautiful praying mantis!
The POV is excellent and the DOF is impecable, with all of the subject in full focus.
Very good lighting and sharp details, too.
Also i really like the way the colors of the mantis look next to those of that old wood...it's absolutely great!
All-in-all a very beautiful composition!

Bravo, TFS and have a great weekend!

Hola Valerie,
Bella composición diagonal perfectamente equilibrada. Colores exquisitos, fondo borroso a juego, magnífica pose, el mejor punto de vista y una nitidez total en todo el insecto completan una bella postal, que bien valdría para un sello de correos.

Hello Valerie,
A strong close-up with fine details!
Good point of view, and it looks like the little guy actually is turning his head to take a look at you...
DOF spot on, great natural colours!
Greetings,

Merci.

Hello Valerie,
this pretty and unusual image, observing this lady mantis busily keeping her toes in good order, is concentrated on behaviour rather than on appearance. That makes your story-telling picture special and unique. In soft colours it shows and shares the deep sympathies you feel for this creature.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
