PERE DAVID'S DEER (ELAPHURUS DAVIDIANUS)

I'm aware that this is not a very good picture. But I think that this birth-scene might be of some interest.
I took it at the Berlin Zoo.
This Deer of the family Cervidae originates from Asia, especially China. It was first made known to Western Science by Father Armand David, French missionary and biologist in 1865. It has an unusual strange look and seems to be a mixture of different animals.
This species became extinct and survived just by captive breeding. It is on the red list of endangered species.(Source: Wikipedia)

We arrived just at the moment when the female was loosing the amniotic fluid, which surprised the animal so much, that she made a big jump. We knew that the birth was close. It was amzing for us that being in a zoo, no assistance was there. The male was not of great help, taking his distance and remaining always in a distance of about 5-6meters. It is why I had some difficulty to get them both on the picture (not having the right lens)
Anyway it was a very emotional moment.

Hello Anne!

Anne

Not sure what to make of this, it stirs up some real emotions within side me though. Nature works in mysterious ways as you have shown in the fact that animals do not always enjoy the "niceties" that we often take too much for granted.

Hi Anne,
Wow.....what a moment you were privy to. Great timing and very skillful work. I never imagined that it is such a matter-of-fact thing and they do it so casually. A rare scene and you are lucky to be present there. Superb composition. Kudos.

Hi Anne.
What a timing and rare scene. I also like great DOF and excellent details/sharpness of the image. You have used excellent exposure parameters and despite the bad light condition managed to get nice picture. My compliments.
Alexei.
