The colourful caterpillars of Erannis defoliaria (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) can be found on several trees, particularly in May. By the end of this month they are grown up and pupation occurs usually in early June. The moths appear in October and November, but can be obseverd also until January. The wing pattern of the male moth is not as colourful as the caterpillar, female E. defoliaria are even wingless and passively await the males for mating.
E. defoliaria is wide-spread in Europe. The larvae feed on several trees and shrubs such as Fagus, Quercus, Betula, Crataegus and Prunus.
Caterpillars of the family Geometridae are generally devoid of the abdominal legs on segments 3 to 5 and have developed a specific way of moving.

An Olympus Digital Extension Tube EX-25 was used in addtion to the lens.
