[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The species shown is
- Xanthoroe montanata
- family Geometridae
resting on a leaf of Urtica dioica.

Yesterday Ivan Kruys 'Argus' posted a picture of a similar moth (Epirrhoe tristata), also looking like a bird dropping.
Indeed, bird droppings were found on adjacent leafs besides further specimens of X. montanata. Looking closer - and this can be done here - shows that the patch is not a bird-dropping but shows highly oredered and complex wing patterns, delicate lines and different brown colours. The species is not as colourful as tropical butterflies, but the pattern may be even more complex.

X. montanata is not rare and occurs in Europe, Asia and also in North America.
Larvae feed on Rubus fructicosus, Rumex and Primula.

CONDITIONS
- bad light conditions: shadow at a forest margin and the moth resting within the nettles
- the latter also caused that selection of the most suitable point of view was not possible
... as a result the left wings are not entirely in focus (f5.6 and sub-optimal angle)
- ISO 400
- hand-held

Hello Peter,
Very fine capture of this moth. I really think moths often show more beautiful patterns on their wings than butterflies, even though they're not usually brightly coloured. I like the colours on this one and details are very sharp. It looks very good on the green leaf.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Peter, excellent composition of this moth on the leaf with excellent exposure and colour. For the most part the detail is good, may be just a tad soft on the left wing.

Thanks, John

Hallo Peter,

Peter

What a beautiful geometridae!
I love the perfect symmetry of its wings pattern. A beautiful pattern even for my room's curtains ;)
Excellent shot, Peter, and interesting information.
Greetings and TFS
