This is the hawkmoth
- Laothoe populi
- family: Sphingidae
which I found attracted by light at the border of a small nature reserve north of the Harz Mountains in Germany.

The species occurs in Europe, Asia and North Africa. The larva develop on Populus and occasionally on Salix.
Forewing length of the moth is about 40 mm and wing span
of males: 60 - 74 mm
of females: 65 - 85 mm.
