... dangerous!

This small and nice-looking moth is dangerous for chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum).
It's a real pest. Already early in the year, leafs of the trees turn to brown colour.

It's name and identity:
- Cameraria ohridella
- family: Gracillariidae
- subfamily: Lithocolletinae

English: Horse chestnut leaf miner
German: Kastanienminiermotte

Species information
C. ohridella was first observed in the late 1970's in northern Greece and was described as a new species of the genus Cameraria in 1986. Unexpectedly, it appeared in Austria in 1989 and has since spread throughout central and eastern Europe. Its current distribution includes Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, southern Sweden, all of Germany, Poland and the central European countries, and it is currently spreading west through France and south through Italy. Since 2002 it has been reported from Spain, Albania, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and western Russia.

Forewing length: 4 - 4.5 mm.

Conditions
- insufficient natural light (ISO 400)
- handheld (supporting the leaf and the camera with fingers of the left hand)

Hello Peter, What a shot. It seems there is a lot of wind blowing. I can see the hair is curling. Excellent Shot. Ganesh

A fine looking moth indeed Peter, a little fishy perhaps, no obvious wings visible but certainly a brilliant capture, perfectly focused and softly illuminated. TFS this interesting image.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Peter. Whay a unusual looking moth this is one i have never seen. you have captured it with good detail and natural colours. Not to sure i want to see to many in the wood in the forest from what you have said in your notes. sounds like it will do a lot of damage. TFS.
Nick..

Hello Peter,

Excellent capture of this tiny moth. Excellent POV and focus, not easy to obtain with a such small insect. Very good sharpness and natural colours. I have already seen this species and there was hundred of them.
Cheers,
Mariki

Lieber Peter,

Peter

Hi Peter,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful moth but it is quite interesting to note that it can be dangerous. Very neat and sharp image with lovely colours and details. On the green leaf it stands out elegantly. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hallo Peter,
den Wicht habe ich noch gar nicht kommentiert. Ich kann das gleiche Kompliment wie bei der Fliege machen: ein Super-Makro!
Herzlich grüsst Dich
Dieter

You can add my country on the list, we have a lot of trees in our town that suffer from this pest but no one knows that, I was always wondering why chestnuts seem to decay without reason but now I know, thanks for sharing knowledge and excellent photo!
