I was happy to discover this specimen of
- Gomphus pulchellus
- family: Gomphidae

The dragonfly was freshly hatched and therefore was rather passive and an ideal object for taking pictures.
In addition the bright light gave me chance to select small apertures in combination with acceptable short exposure times. So I could achieve a suitable depth of field by a handheld capture.

Species information
G. pulchellus occurs in West-Europe (Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain. It is absent from Scandinavia, Great Britain and Italy and most parts of Austria.
In contrast to other species of the genus, pulchellus prefers ponds and small lakes.

Very detailed and nicely composed shot. It is often hard to fill this much of the frame when the subject is a dragonfly, due to their body shapes. TFS

Hi Peter

A very good shot of this lovely species - not so often seen here on TN and one that i hope to find someday, too :)
It's not always that we find our subjects on an isolated twig and we must do our best with what we get...and i think you did great here.
Considerring the conditions, this is a spot-on macro, taken from an excellent POV (very good for the ID of the species) and with a nice DOF.
Beside that, it's sharp and well saturated.
