Class Mammalia, order carnivora, family canidae

The gray wolf (canis lupus) shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris).

Wolves and people evolved in Ice Age Eurasia and spread throughout a large part of the world in each other's company. Hard times must have occasionally thrown them into severe competition, but the wolf human relationship was governed by mutual tolerance and respect. This changed when humans assumed pastoral and agricultural life-styles and began campaigns to exterminate their old competitor to make the world safe for large numbers of domestic animals, or to divert the wolf's share of wild meat to an ever- increasing human population. The result has been the elimination of wolves almost everywhere that people dominate the land (Source)

Taken in animal park Olderdissen, Bielefeld, Germany.
Olderdissen is a free 24h animal park in Bielefeld showing native animals. Private guided tours are available via Zooschule Grünfuchs, aka biologist Antje Fischer (highly recommended!).

Technical:
363 mm @ISO 800; PP: curves, resized, sharpened

Fill flash would have been a good idea in this backlit portrait situation, if I'd had that in my repertoire (happy if someone could give me a quick explanation how to persuade my cam to use only a little flash!). Instead, I used curves in PS to bring out some more detail in the face, keep some contrast and keep the highlights down.

I LOVE wolves! This one seems a bit different from ours (that I never had the chance to photograph). He really looks like a “normal” dog : ) Very good portrait of this one. Good details, POV and DOF. Thanks a lot for this beautiful picture!

Hello Gabi, this wolf really looks very close to the domestic dog. He does have that untamed look in his eye. Low POV and composition are very good, details are excellent. Well done.

It looks like the light was pretty bright, but you an excellent job taming it. Nice color saturation and sharp details. I really like the oveall composition with him laying in the grren vegetation. Nice low POV gives that eye level feel.

Excellent POV and sharp detail, with the grass surrounding the wolf providing great natural framing..
It looks like you had difficult light to deal with, but you managed it very well. Another approach would have been to widen the aperture, bringing just the head in, producing a more blurred BG/FG... And reduce the film speed..Just my two cents :)

J'avoue bien humblement faire connaissance, grâce à votre photo, du loup européen pour la première fois.
Quel bel animal et quelle élégance. Magnifique photo par la pose de l'animal, les couleurs et la lumière.
Plus on le regarde, moins on le craint!
