I would of course rather go to Africa and see these
and other animals in their natural habitat...

...or one can enjoy a day in the cologne zoo for 13 euros.*g*

This is a group of Impalas resting in the sun.

*****************
An impala (Aepyceros melampus Greek aipos "high"
ceros "horn" + melas "black" pous "foot") is a medium-
sized African antelope. The name impala comes from the
Zulu language. They are found in savannas in Kenya,
Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia,
Zimbabwe, southern Angola, northeastern South Africa
and Uganda (the source of that country's capital
city's name - Kampala).

Average weight for an Impala is approximately 75
kilograms. They are reddish-brown in color with
lighter flanks, and have white underbellies. Males
have lyre-shaped horns which can reach up to 90
centimeters in length. When frightened or startled the
whole herd starts leaping about in order to confuse
their predator. They can jump distances more than 9
meters (30 feet) and 2.5 meters (8 feet) high. They
are prey to almost every large predator.

Hi Thor,
I think most of us would love to go to Africa but for most it's a trip of a lifetime. The light here could convince me you were in Africa :-) Nice warm light and great colours. It's one of those compositions I would have struggled with, but I really like what you've done here, the crop with just the legs in the background and the thick black frame works really well. A nice capture.
Hope all is well and my best regards,
Adrian

Very well done.

Hi Thorsten

Possibly a shot I never would have had the courage to post, but the longer I looked at it the more I liked it. You must remember that this is the most abundant antelope to be found in our nature reserves, so every time I go to the park (at least once or twice every month) I would literally see hundreds of these guys and therefore I might be much more picky and probably over cautious of my choice of photo I would post. In so doing I might actually slip some shots past that really were worth posting. I do hope that some day I will be able to capture a shot of 30-40 newly born calves in the early morning light. I can promise you it is a sight one does not easily forget. This shot of yours remind me much of such a scenario.

When the eyes initially make contact with this shot, it obviously focuses on the 5 juvenile Impalas lying in front. Then it moves over to that confusion of legs in the top part of the shot that actually provide some very interesting attraction. Thereafter it shifts back to the antelopes on the ground where it remains to discover all the detail. I believe that is the signs of a good composition and photo. The eye did not wonder off and lost track of the initial subject, but it merely took in some more detail in the rest of the frame and because there is nothing else to distract it returns and stays fixed to the main subject. Great stuff.

I like the warm colour tones of the shot, the great detail on the Impalas, the well balanced exposure (well lit in the FG and darker in the BG), and the play of light on the Impalas heads and tips of their ears.

Good work MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot
