Sometimes I really wish I had a decent lens...*g*

Something like the EF 100-400 IS, then this shot
would maybe have turned out a little bit better -
my first Heron inflight.

My 135-400 is ok, but kind of slow and just for nice sunny weather, maybe next year...

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)
is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native
throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of
Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west,
but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions.

It is a large bird, standing 90-100 cm tall, with a
175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg. Its plumage
is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults
have a white head with a broad black supercilium and
slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head.
It has a powerful pinkish-yellow bill, which is
brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with
its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is
characteristic of herons and bitterns, and
distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills,
which extend their necks.

It is closely related and similar to the American Great
Blue Heron, which differs in slightly larger size, and
chestnut-brown flanks and thighs. The Australian
White-faced Heron is often incorrectly called Grey Heron.

You have done well, photographing birds in flight is not as easy as some may think. I know ...I tried it yesterday, and on manual focus! You have placed the bird nicely in the frame and the wing and tail feathers are nicely defined. Well done.
Cheers
Elizabeth.

Hi Thorsten.
Ditto with Elizabeth. Great composition with lovely feather detail in the wings and tail.
I enjoy the way you have left good room in the composition for him to fly into with a lovely water pattern and colour to make him really stand out.
Wonderful flight image,

Kathleen

Buen encudadre para esta preciosa garza. Buena luz y contraste con el agua.

Hi Thor

What are you complaining about? You get terrific result as it is!!! ;)
But i know what you mean, my friend. I too would love a long les that has IS and if it's also one from the Canon "L" series it woild be fantastic...but we can't have them call, can we?...
Anyway, this is a splendid in-flight shot, one with great sharpness across the entire body and wings of this graceful heron.
The colors and textures you managed to get from its plumage are outstanding and that BG is just a bliss, complemening your subject very well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Thorsten,
Whatever you think, you make great action pictures :-)
As my father used to say : Just think other ones who don't have what you have :-)

This picture is really beautiful. The diagonal open wings are simply excellent and details on them are perfectly captured.
Great colours too.
Regards,

Claude

Hallo Thorsten,
What an excellent shot of this majestic bird. The composition is perfect the way you let him swoop into the picture. The clarity of his wings show the spread feathers beautifully.
Great, great picture.

Hi Thorsten,

I have the 100-400 and it's a decent lens once you get used to it. But you'll find that with a 10 meg camera you can crop a fair bit without losing too much detail. Anyway, you've done a great job in capturing this Heron in flight, and birds in flight are never that easy. Excellent wingspan and I love the spanning of the tail feathers.

Kind regards,

Mike

Hi Thorsten,

I think this is an excellent capture. The detail and sharpness is good and the comp conveys a nice sense of space. Very well done indeed!

Hallo Thorsten
Kein Grund für falsche Bescheidenheit ;-) die Aufnahme ist doch super gut gelungen! Schärfe und Farben sind super gut gelungen, wirklich besser hätte ich das auch mit dem Canon 100-400 IS nicht hinbekommen !
