Some friendly winter guests in cologne on the Rhine:
Canada Geese (Branta canadensis)...
and nice subjects to test my new equipment - the 40D with the 100-400mm.
************************
The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), also referred to
as the Canadian Goose, belongs to the Branta genus of
geese, which contains species with largely black
plumage, distinguishing them from the grey species of
the Anser genus. The species name, canadensis, is a New
Latin word meaning "of Canada".
the black head and neck with white "chinstrap"
distinguish the Canada Goose from all except the
Barnacle Goose, but the latter has a black breast, and
grey, rather than brownish, body plumage. There are
seven subspecies of this bird, of varying sizes and
plumage details, but all are recognizable as Canada
Geese. Some of the smaller races can be hard to
distinguish from the newly-separated Cackling Goose.
This species is 76-110 cm long with a 127-180 cm wing
span. Males usually weigh 3.2–6.5 kg, and can be very
aggressive in defending territory. The female looks
virtually identical but is slightly lighter at 2.5–5.5
kg, generally are 10% physically smaller than their
male counterparts, and has a different honk. An
exceptionally large male of the race B. c. maxima, the
"giant Canada goose" (which rarely exceed 8 kg),
weighed 10.9 kg and had a wingspan of 2.24 m. The life
span in the wild is 10-24 years.

Thorsten,
A good action shot. The detail and composition maintained in this pic is very good as it's not always easy to get it detailed when the subjects are in flight like you have here.
TFS,
Sheriff
Hi Torsten,
long time no see:-)
Congrats to your new toys, I expect more from you now.
This is a nice in-flight shot of two Canada Gees but you can keep them, up here they counts like pest.
Good sharpness with fine details and nice colours.
Maybe the thing down are a bit distracting but not much.
Well done, mf.

Hi Thorsten.
You managed to catch a charming pair of gooses. Their poses, wingspread and composition of the picture are excellent. I like perfect exposure, rich colours of the birds and excellent sharpness of their images. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Thorsten
Congratulations with the new equipment. I hope you will still develop a long and rewarding relationship with the big Canon and the super lens. I am sure you will know how to put it to excellent use.
Nice capture of these geese in-flight. I am just wondering what those little black spots might be behind the first goose. Is it perhaps two distant birds or is it some other "strange" unidentified flying (or dropping) objects (chuckle)? The colours and the sharpness look fine and so does the composition. Just a slight pity of the buildings below.
Well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot
PS. I hope you are better now and that all is well again.
