When it is nice weather i like to make a stop near the
rhine on my way to work and try to capture whatever
is flying around there - mostly gulls and mallards,
sometimes Canada Geese and on one lucky morning this
pretty Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) male.

This is a strong crop, so the quality is not perfect,
but i liked in sitting in sun, so i decided to show
him anyway.

Thanks & have a great sunday my friends! :-)

The attempt to capture him while flying can be seen
in the WS-section.

*****************

The Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a bird of prey
species belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon
family Falconidae.

This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread
in Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as occasionally
reaching the east coast of North America. The Common
Kestrel is small compared with other birds of prey, but
larger than most songbirds. Kestrels have long wings as
well as a distinctive long tail like the other Falco
species. This bird's plumage is mainly brown with dark
spots. Unlike most hawks they display sexual colour
dimorphism with the male having a blue-grey head and
tail. The tail is brown with black bars in females, and
has a black tip with a narrow white rim in both sexes.
All Common Kestrels sexes have a prominent black malar
stripe like their closest relatives.

Common Kestrels measure 34 – 38 cm from head to tail,
with a wingspan of 70 – 80 cm. The average adult male
weighs around 155 g with the adult female weighing
around 184 g.

Hi Thorsten.
I like your way to work. It gifts you amazing subjects for shooting. Excellent picture of the fine bird. I like its simply and very impressive subject, excellent DOF and details of the image, nice sunlight and rich pleasant colours. Composition of the shot is perfect too. Well done and TFS.

Hello Thorsten
Raptors are always a special capture for me and this is no exception..The details are very good even with the crop..The light is fantastic and really highlights what wonderful birds Kestrels are..Mostly they are seen as a hovering silhouette.
Your inflight shot is also very good and worthy of a post of its own.
Best Regards
Paul

An excellent shot, Thorsten...This is the first time I'm looking at your work and I'm very inspired by it...
Very well done, you've brought out such fine details of this beautiful bird that one fells one can touch it, or that if we do something, it might fly away, if you know what I mean.
TFS!
Cheers!
Goldy

Hallo Thorsten
What a wonderful shot. You have managed to capture this beautiful kestrel in a lovely pose, displaying the feathers on the chest and the feathers on the back well. The patterns on the plumage are displayed with great clarity. The bird looks very interested in something at the surface, maybe some prey to eat? Thanks for sharing this majestic bird with us. A beautiful perspective, with sharp details and focus. The clarity of the eyes and paws is very impressive. The light blue background highlight the different colours of the plumage to a great extent. Thanks for sharing, and have an enjoyable day.
Best regards
Anna

HI Thorsten,
That IS a beautiful kestrel.
The light on him is just perfect.
Great composition.
Not the sharpest details, but the gift of that opportunity more than makes up for that. : )
TFS. : )

Hello Thorsten,

What a beautiful image of this lovely male Kestrel you are showing us here.
Excellent composition and exposure.
Most wonderful feather details, colors and soft warm light.
Love the catchlight in the eye and the pose of the bird very much.
Perfect how the Kestrel does stand out against the soft blue color tone of the sky.
Superb work and great note also.
TFS!!!

Warm regards,

Harry

Hello Thorsten,
What a beauties!: the Kestrel and the photo as a whole. But I would like to see the photo in one image. The length of 800 is too much. 650 should be better, I think.
But the photo is excellent. Perfect clear colours and fantastic sharpness in a very good composition. Excellent DOF, pose and POV.
Regards,
Peter

Hallo Thorsten,

Hi Thor

Nice to see you again, old friend. Hope you are well :)
These two shots of this beautiful kestrel are definitely worth showing and did good to post them.
Indeed that low and warm light on the suject is very special and it surely brings a certain something extra for the image. Due to that, the colors are superbly saturated and the kestrel stand out so well from the branches and the beautiful blue sky in the BG.
Perhaps a quick run through NeatImage just to remove some noise, but this is really less relevant. Very well done!

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Thorsten,
Gruss..Sky

Hi Thorsten

Those branches almost seem like a throne reaching up to present this lovely bird into the photo. The simplicity of the shot, the sky, the Kestrel, and the twigs, actually makes this stunning shot even more successful.

The vertical composition worked well and the additional space provided in front of the bird really gives it ample freedom to take-off of move into. The wonderful patterns of the plumage were well captured with good details and spot-on exposure management.

Well done and TFS.
