Continuing the birds of cologne - this is a cormorant
sitting on a signpost next to the rhine checking what
i am doing down below...

i saw him there a couple mornings, but normally he flew
away before i could get a nice shot - this time he
posed long enough.

The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), known as the
Great Black Cormorant across the Northern Hemisphere,
the Black Cormorant in Australia and the Black Shag
further south in New Zealand, is a widespread member of
the cormorant family of seabirds. It breeds in much of
the Old World and the Atlantic coast of North America.

The Great Cormorant is a large black bird, 77-94 cm in
length with a 121-149 cm wingspan. It has a longish
tail and yellow throat-patch. Adults have white thigh
patches in the breeding season. In European waters it
can be distinguished from the Common Shag by its larger
size, heavier build, thicker bill, lack of a crest and
plumage without any green tinge.

This is a very common and widespread bird species. It
feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes
and rivers. Northern birds migrate south and winter
along any coast that is well-supplied with fish.

Hello Thorsten,

Great composition, I like it very much (it gives the impression that the cormorant is reading a book :-) ). Very good pose of the bird. Excellent sharpness. Great light and colours.

Hi Thorsten

What an interesting and striking image. The bright red signpost, the black Cormorant, and the intense blue sky. Maybe you didn't look your normal self that morning so you didn't scare the bird away (chuckle) and it sat a while longer so you could snatch this shot.

I like it and it has very prominent visual impact due to the richly saturated colours and strong sharp details of the very close-up image of the bird. The exposure was well managed and created excellent lighting on the subject.
