My shot of today is not really spectacular, but a lucky one...
my boss had ordered two Crayfish for his pond at home
and they were delivered today in a box, which we
opened thinking it was a sample for our lab.
what we found surprised us - a pair of Crayfish -
and of course i got my camera and took a few shots.
unfortunately again with a dull bg, since i only could
put the poor thing on the table, but i thought it
would be worth showing anyway since there are not too
many Crayfish to be seen on TN.

Crayfish, often referred to as crawfish or crawdad and
less often called mudbug, freshwater lobster, or tiny
creek lobster are freshwater crustaceans resembling
small lobsters, to which they are closely related.
They are found in bodies of fresh water that do not
freeze to the bottom, and which have shelter against
predators. Most crayfish cannot tolerate polluted
water, although some species such as the invasive
Procambarus clarkii are more hardy. Some crayfish have
been found living as much as 3 m (10 feet) underground.

The name "crayfish" does not derive from the
word "fish", but rather from the Old French word
escrevisse (Modern French écrevisse) meaning "crevice"
and referring to the habitat of the animal. The word
has been modified to "crayfish" by association
with "fish". The largely American variant "crawfish"
is similarly derived. (This derivation is an example
of folk etymology.)

In New Zealand the name crayfish (or cray) refers to a
spiny lobster, and crayfish are called freshwater
crays or koura, the Māori name for the animal.
Some kinds of crayfish are known locally as lobsters,
crawdads, mudbugs, carmels, yabbies, or spoondogs.

There are three families of crayfish, two in the
northern hemisphere and one in the southern
hemisphere. The southern-hemisphere (Gondwana-
distributed) family Parastacidae lives in South
America, Madagascar and Australasia, and is
distinguished by the lack of the first pair of
pleopods. Of the other two families, members of
the Astacidae live in western Eurasia and western
North America and members of the family Cambaridae
live in eastern Asia and eastern North America.

Europe is home to seven species of crayfish in the
genera Astacus and Austropotamobius.
Cambaroides is native to Japan and eastern mainland Asia.

Hi Thorsten,
diese Viecher machen mir etwas Angst - da möchte ich im Meer nicht drauftreten!
Aber ein toller Schuß mit gutem Licht und schönem gleichmäßig hellblauen Hintergrund.

Hallo Thorsten.
A pretty crayfish. I prefer to take this shot in a see, its original habitat environment, but some times everything is not possible that we want to. You managed the light very well. Soft and clear details. I like it Thorsten.

Guten Morgen Thorsten,
wenn ich so ein Tier sehe denke ich automatisch an leckere Nordessekrabben direkt vom Kutter. (Dein Lobster lebt aber im Süßwasser und ist erheblich größer)- Eine sehr informative Präsentation dieses Wasserbewohners lieferst Du uns hier. Das Foto ist technisch einwandfrei. Schön wäre es wenn das passende Umfeld zum Schalentier dabei wäre. Man(n) kann halt nicht alles im Leben haben. ;-) (gibt es für die Canon überhaupt ein Unterwassergehäuse?) Ich hätte an Deiner Stelle aber genau so reagiert. Frage nur: was macht Dein Boss mit den Tieren? Deine Bemerkungen zum Foto ist super. Sehr gut finde ich, daß Du es auch geschafft hast mich über diesen "Cray-fish" schlau zum machen. Gestern Abend suchte ich noch Informationen über die Wespe von Sky.
Ich wünsche Dir ein schönes Wochenende.

da hattest du ja ein tolles Model fuer das naechste Speisenkartendesign *grins*. Super scharf hast ihn erwischt und er passt sehr gut zu dem blauen Hintergrund, obwohl im Kochtopf gefaellt der mir noch besser :-)

Hello Thor,
I can't remember seeing a Crayfish on TN before. This is a very good-looking sample, he looks very healthy. It's a great shot too, excellent detail, we can see every mark on his armour suit. Great colours and the background doesn't matter, there can't be much else available in a lab. Good job he's not in this part of the world, the poor little fellow would probably be in some Gumbo by now :-(

Interesting to look at crayfishs.
The flash effect is a little disturbing. When no diffusor is available, some other objects can be used (a half transparent plastic white box gives convaincing results)
