[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday, I met with the first wasp in our garden this year. Species identification is not
really clear for me, as the most important colour pattern characters are on the face of the insect.
Most probably, however, this is
- Dolichovespula media
- Hymenoptera, Vespidae

German: Mittlere Wespe

The species is rather common in southern Europe but lesso in Germany.

Parameters
- bright sunlight
- ISO 400
- handheld, very close to the insect.

Technique
In order to avoid movement-caused unsharpness, I supported my the camera with my left hand - two fingers touching the wood below the wasp and the thumb supporting the camera.

Hello Peter,
Very good close up. What a combination: f/18 x 1/80. Very effective though!
Well done

Dear Peter!
Congratulation because of your first picture of wasp this year (it looks that we started this spring taking pictures of the some insect group ;>).
I believe that you ID is correct, this is a queen I think.
Best greetings,
Radomir

Hi Peter,

Nice & sharp macro shot. High f number has given the total frame its full clarity!

Subhayan.

Hello Peter,

Very good picture of this wasp. I think it is always difficult to identify such a wasp. I think you wasp is either dolichovespula saxonica or vespula vulgaris depending on the pattern on the clypeus (www.gardensafari.net). On this site, there is also a picture of dolichovespula media and this wasp is darker than the one you photographied. It is a queen because the other members of a colony do not survive the winter and they begin their nest only in May.
Regards,
Mariki

Hola Peter, una avispa me imagino con un poco de frio, muy buena luz y nitidez, los colores son reales y agradables. Un saludo

Hello Peter, WOW what a shot. Excellent sharp focus and great clarity. Sharp image quality and good composition. Ganesh

Peter, the image of this Wasp is so sharp it is unbelievable.
A picture like this proves that imaging sometimes can be so perfect one has a strong feeling that one is looking at the subject with one's own eyes and not rhough a lens.
This image has that qulaity.
Superb natural colours too.
Best regards.
Ram
