"First May Beetle"
This picture shows the first may (?) beetle we observed in our region on April 24th.
It's a well known species in the most parts of Europe, except Spain and southern Italy. The may beetle usually appears by the beginning of may.
This year we have a really warm spring in Germany with often about 30 degrees and nearly no rain in the second part of April. This causes that the insects' offspring appears earlier in the year.

About the species:
family: Scarabaeidae
subfamily: Melolonthinae
species: Melolontha melolontha
body length: about 20 - 30mm

The beetles prefer fields or forests to put their eggs (about 20 - 30) in the ground. The offspring hatches in autumn and stays in the ground until the spring in the next year. The species occurs in heights until 1000m.

Hello Fabian,
Nice shot of what we call 'majbagge' in Swedish, because as you say, this is when they appear. In English it is called the Cockchafer.
Good sharpness and detail on the front of the beetle, fine contrast with the leaf BG and set in a pleasing composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Fabian,

Hello Fabian,
Brilliant macro of this Cockchafer showing very sharp and interesting details and in good natural colour. I like your composition and the light green leaf makes a very nice contrasting background.
